I have made the mistake more times than I care to count. A big plate of fish tacos at 1:30 in the afternoon, then a 2 p.m. entry into the water. The result is always the same. The old advice loops through my head: wait an hour, wait two, don't swim on a full stomach. Nobody tells you why, beyond a vague warning about cramps and a story about someone's cousin.
Over enough years of snorkeling, surfing dawn patrols, and paddling against afternoon currents, I started thinking about meals the way I think about gear. - Thirty to sixty minutes before: eat something small and carbohydrate-leaning. A banana, a date, a granola bar, a few crackers. The solution is not to starve. It is to eat the meal, rest, and digest before you swim. Groupers do not hunt on a full stomach. Neither should you.
