The Hidden Resistance in Your Snorkel
You can’t tell how hard a snorkel breathes just by looking at it. That’s not an opinion-it’s backed by data. In a study that tested 50 random snorkel devices, even trained technicians could only correctly identify a high-resistance snorkel about one out of four times by visual inspection alone. The rest of the time, they were guessing.
That means the sleek, feature-packed snorkel on the shelf might actually create more resistance than a basic J-tube. Why? Because every added feature-a splash guard, a dry valve, a purge system-narrows the airway or adds moving parts. More parts mean more potential for restriction. And when you’re breathing face-down, with your chest immersed and your lungs working against water pressure, every extra bit of resistance matters.

- Wait after flying. The research suggests that long-haul flights can temporarily affect your lung membranes. Give yourself at least a day or two before snorkeling seriously.
- Know the warning signs. Sudden fatigue, shortness of breath, a feeling of doom-these aren’t “just panic.” They’re your lungs telling you something is wrong. Remove your mask, roll onto your back, and signal for help.
- Stay where you can touch bottom. Almost all serious incidents happen where the snorkeler can’t stand. Start shallow. Get comfortable. Then venture deeper-but always with a buddy.
