Why I Stopped Snorkeling the Day I Landed (And You Should Too)

I've spent years on the water. Kayaking through mangroves, paddleboarding at dawn, diving shipwrecks, and snorkeling every chance I get. I love the ocean the way some people love mountains. The Hidden Risk Nobody Talks About

Here's the thing nobody tells you at the rental shop. According to a major study published by the Hawai'i Department of Health, the typical snorkeling emergency doesn't look like drowning. No splashing, no yelling. Just sudden shortness of breath, fatigue, a feeling of doom, then darkness. The study called it Snorkel-Induced Rapid Onset Pulmonary Edema—SI-ROPE for short.

Here's what happens: every time you inhale through a snorkel, you create negative pressure in your chest. The more resistance the snorkel has, the harder your lungs have to work. Add the pressure of being immersed in water, plus any pre-existing heart or lung issues, and that negative pressure can pull fluid from your blood vessels into your lungs. You're drowning from the inside out.

What I Do Differently Now

  • Give yourself a buffer. After any flight longer than 4 or 5 hours, don't snorkel seriously for at least two days. Walk the beach. Wade in the shallows. Let your body re-acclimate.

The ideal time to snorkel isn't when the calendar says summer. It's when you're rested, acclimated, and fully aware of what your body and your equipment are asking of each other.
