And that caution might be exactly what your lungs need, especially if you've just flown across the Pacific.

The Snorkel Safety Study actually recommends waiting two to three days after a long flight before snorkeling. Why? Because the mild hypoxia you experience during air travel can subtly weaken the membrane in your lungs that keeps fluid out. Combine that with a high-resistance snorkel and even moderate exertion, and you've got a recipe for trouble-especially in calm, warm water that makes you feel invincible.

The numbers from the Medical Examiner's reports in Hawaii are sobering. Of 32 snorkel-related deaths reviewed, 15 were judged very likely caused by hypoxia from SI-ROPE. Another 14 were likely either SI-ROPE or aspiration. That means nearly half of those deaths involved a mechanism that can happen silently, without any visible struggle. And many of those victims were experienced swimmers. They knew what they were doing. They just didn't know about this particular risk.

There's also a fascinating finding about full-face masks. Among survey participants, almost all of whom were in trouble while wearing one, the mask was seen as a contributing factor. I'm not here to bash any type of gear-I use a full-face mask myself. But it's a reminder that more complex designs can introduce more ways for something to go wrong. But the science suggests that subtle changes in your lungs from hours at altitude can last for a couple of days. Why gamble with that?

So now, when friends ask me for the best time to snorkel in Hawaii, I don't just say summer or winter. I tell them: the best time is after you've been here for at least two full days. The best time is when you're wearing gear you've tested and trust. The best time is when you're humble enough to stay in shallow water until you're sure.

The ocean will still be there tomorrow. The turtles aren't going anywhere. And your lungs will thank you for being patient.
