Why I Ditched My Weight Belt for Surface Snorkeling (and You Might Want To, Too)

I’ll be honest: I used to strap on a weight belt every time I went snorkeling. It just felt right. I’d come from scuba diving, where a little extra lead helps you hover effortlessly. That’s the upside. And it’s real. But there’s a downside that’s much less obvious-and far more serious.

What the Research Actually Found

The Snorkel Safety Study-a deep dive into why snorkelers get into trouble-identified a condition called Snorkel-Induced Rapid Onset Pulmonary Edema, or SI-ROPE. It’s not about swallowing water. It’s about the negative pressure your lungs have to create to pull air through a snorkel.

Here’s the thing: even the best snorkel adds some resistance. Immersion itself compresses your chest and shifts blood into your lungs. Now add a weight belt on top of that. Your body works harder to stay level. Your breathing rate goes up. Your heart pumps a little faster. And every breath requires a stronger pull.

Over time-sometimes just minutes-that negative pressure can cause fluid to leak into your lungs. That’s SI-ROPE. And it happens quietly.

The study documented a typical sequence:

  1. Sudden shortness of breath and fatigue
  2. Feeling of panic or doom
  3. Loss of strength
  4. Diminishing consciousness

There’s no splashing. No yelling. Just a quiet fade. And weight belts, by increasing the work of breathing, can be a contributing factor.

The Numbers That Made Me Rethink

Between 2014 and 2023, snorkeling was the leading cause of visitor drownings in Hawai‘i-more than swimming, surfing, or boating. But here’s what surprised me: it wasn’t inexperienced swimmers getting into trouble. Among survivors surveyed, lack of skill or experience was rarely the trigger.

Instead, common threads included recent long-haul air travel, undiagnosed heart conditions, and extraordinary exertion-like swimming against a strong current or doing a workout while snorkeling.

And when researchers tested snorkels for resistance, they found huge variation. You cannot tell by looking whether a snorkel is high-resistance or low. The study showed that even trained technicians guessed correctly only about a quarter of the time.

That means you could be breathing through a snorkel that’s making your lungs work harder than you realize-and a weight belt makes it harder still.

What I Do Now

I’m not saying weight belts are bad for everyone, everywhere. But for surface snorkeling-floating face-down, breathing through a tube, staying where you can touch the bottom-I’ve changed my approach completely.

  • Start without a weight belt. Unless you’re in extreme conditions, try going without. A wetsuit gives plenty of buoyancy. A properly fitted Seaview 180 mask sits comfortably without extra lead.
  • If you really need weight, go minimal. One pound-not two or three-might be enough. And use a quick-release belt you can ditch instantly.

  • Know the early signs. Shortness of breath is not something to push through. If you feel like you’re working to breathe, take off your mask, roll onto your back, get to shore, and rest. The reef will still be there.

Gear should serve the activity, not the other way around. A weight belt makes sense for scuba. It makes sense for freediving. But for relaxed surface snorkeling, it can add unnecessary risk.
