How to Actually Test Your Rental Gear
You don’t need a lab to check your snorkel. Here’s what I do now, every single time I pick up unfamiliar gear:
- Take a hard inhale before you leave the shop. Put the mouthpiece in and breathe in as fast and deep as you can, like you just surfaced after a long dive. If you feel any noticeable resistance, ask for a different model.
- Check the bore size if possible. Snorkels with a narrow internal diameter-under about 19mm-create more resistance. You can’t always measure it, but you can ask the shop staff. If they don’t know, that’s a warning sign.
- Test in shallow water first. Swim a few laps in waist-deep, calm water. If you feel shortness of breath, fatigue, or that “I can’t get enough air” feeling, stop immediately. Remove the snorkel. Float on your back. If the feeling doesn’t resolve quickly, don’t push yourself.
