What the Ocean Taught Me About Breathing (And Why Cancun Changed Everything)

I’ve been snorkeling since I was old enough to kick fins without swallowing half the Caribbean. For most of that time, I thought I had it figured out. Check the weather. Don’t touch the coral. Stay hydrated. Swim with a buddy. That was the extent of my pre-dive checklist. Then I spent a week in Cancun, and everything I thought I knew about snorkeling got turned on its head.

Not because of the water—Cancun’s reefs are as stunning as ever, with turquoise visibility and sea turtles gliding through channels of elkhorn coral. But because I started asking questions that nobody around me seemed to be asking. Why do some days feel effortless on the surface, and other days leave me gasping after ten minutes? Why do experienced swimmers sometimes get into trouble on calm days? The answers led me down a rabbit hole of research that changed how I prepare for every single trip. This isn’t about fear. The Hidden Physics of Floating Face-Down

Here’s something that never crossed my mind during my early years of snorkeling: when you’re floating prone on the surface, your lungs are fighting a constant, invisible battle. Water pressure at just chest depth adds roughly 30 centimeters of pressure against your ribcage. On top of that, every breath you take through a snorkel requires your body to generate negative pressure inside your chest—a vacuum that pulls air in against resistance from the tube and valves.

But researchers in Hawai‘i, who studied years of snorkeling incidents, discovered a phenomenon called Snorkel-Induced Rapid Onset Pulmonary Edema—or SI-ROPE. In simple terms, the negative pressure from breathing through certain snorkels, especially during exertion, can cause fluid to shift into the lung’s air spaces. The sequence is almost always the same: sudden shortness of breath, fatigue, a feeling of panic, then diminishing consciousness. And critically, it happens without any water being inhaled.

The study found that the resistance of a snorkel can vary wildly between designs, and—here’s the kicker—you can’t tell just by looking. They tested fifty different devices and found that experienced technicians could only identify high-resistance snorkels by sight about a quarter of the time. That means you could be using a snorkel that’s making your lungs work significantly harder, and you’d never know until it’s too late.

The Flight That Changes Everything

If you’ve ever flown to Cancun—and if you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you have—you sat in a pressurized cabin at roughly 6,000 to 8,000 feet equivalent altitude for several hours. Your body experiences mild, sustained low oxygen levels during that time. For most people, it’s harmless. But the Hawai‘i researchers noted a strong physiological suspicion that this mild hypoxemia may temporarily affect the delicate membranes in your lungs where oxygen enters your bloodstream.

Now add the negative pressure from snorkeling, the mild exertion of swimming against a current, and the fact that many visitors to Cancun are over 50—an age where subtle cardiovascular changes are more common. The combination isn’t a guarantee of trouble, but it’s worth respecting. The study’s proposed safety message says it plainly: “It may be prudent to wait several days after arrival by air before snorkeling.”

I started following that advice myself. On my last Cancun trip, I spent the first full day just walking the beach and swimming in the hotel pool. The next morning, when I finally slipped into the water at Punta Nizuc, I felt more relaxed, my breathing came easier, and I actually saw more wildlife because I wasn’t distracted by effort.

What Good Gear Actually Does

  6. Don’t exert yourself through your snorkel. If you want to swim hard, use a different breathing technique. Snorkels add resistance, and your lungs have to work harder.

The Bigger Picture

The research coming out of Hawai‘i makes one thing clear: snorkeling is not a benign, low-risk activity, even for experienced swimmers. But that doesn’t mean you should stay out of the water. It means you should go in with your eyes open—and with gear that’s been designed thoughtfully for the conditions you’ll face.

I still get that same thrill every time I put my mask on and slip beneath the surface. The coral gardens off Cancun, the schools of blue tang, the moment a sea turtle rises for air beside you—none of that magic has diminished. But now I understand the quiet physics at play inside my own chest. And that understanding doesn’t take away from the experience. It makes me a better, safer, more present snorkeler.
