What the Ocean Taught Me About Breathing

I still remember the first time I floated face-down in clear, warm water and watched a sea turtle glide beneath me. The sunlight scattered through the surface, the reef stretched out like a hidden garden, and for a few minutes, I forgot I was even breathing. That moment—weightless, silent, utterly present—is why I keep coming back to the water.

But over the years, I've learned something I wish I'd known sooner: the gear that gives us that window into another world can also, under the wrong conditions, become a quiet danger. Not because it fails, but because of something invisible—the physics of every breath we take.

The Breath You Never Think About

When you're snorkeling, you're not breathing the way you do on land. You're pulling air through a tube while your chest is submerged, and that takes a little more effort. That extra effort creates negative pressure in your chest—a vacuum with every inhalation. Most of the time, it's harmless. But add the right combination of factors, and it can trigger something called Snorkel Induced Rapid Onset Pulmonary Edema, or SI-ROPE.

Here's what happens: the negative pressure can pull fluid from your blood vessels into your lungs. Your lungs fill with fluid, your oxygen levels drop, and suddenly you feel weak, short of breath, and confused. It happens fast. And it can happen without any water going down your airway—no coughing, no splashing, no obvious signs of trouble.

The Hawai'i Department of Health's Snorkel Safety Study, published in the Hawai'i Journal of Health & Social Welfare, measured the breathing resistance of 50 different snorkel devices. At a flow rate of 3 liters per second—roughly what you'd use during a gentle swim—some snorkels required more than five centimeters of water column of negative pressure. Others required much less. And here's the surprising part: even experienced technicians couldn't reliably tell which snorkels were high-resistance just by looking at them. They guessed wrong 74% of the time on the high-resistance models.

The Hard Numbers

Let's be honest about the data. From 2014 to 2023, snorkeling was the leading cause of visitor drownings in Hawai'i—225 deaths. For residents, it was 62. That's more than swimming, more than surfing, more than any other single water activity.

The study also found that 38% of near-drowning incidents involved full-face masks, and 90% of those users considered the mask a contributing factor. And here's what surprised me: inexperience was rarely the cause. Almost all incidents happened where the snorkeler couldn't touch the bottom. Many of the victims were experienced swimmers.

That changed how I think about risk. It's not about skill. It's about the unseen demands we place on our bodies when we breathe through a tube while floating in saltwater.

The Flight Connection You Never Considered

Here's something I bet you haven't thought about: the airplane ride to your snorkeling destination.

Commercial aircraft cabins are pressurized to around 6,000–8,000 feet equivalent altitude. You sit for hours breathing air that's slightly lower in oxygen than at sea level. For most people, that's no big deal. But for some, it causes subtle, temporary changes to the delicate membranes in your lungs—the same membranes that will soon be asked to handle the negative pressure of snorkeling.

The study couldn't prove a definitive link, but the physiology is strong enough that Hawai'i's Department of Health now recommends waiting 2–3 days after long-haul air travel before snorkeling. I've started following that advice myself, and I've noticed I feel more relaxed and comfortable in the water when I do.

How We Designed for This

When we sat down to design the Seaview 180 mask, we didn't start with looks. We started with the research. We asked: what actually matters for safe, comfortable breathing at the surface?

The answer shaped everything. The Seaview 180 separates the airflow pathways—inhaled air comes through a dedicated channel, exhaled air exits through another. But let me be clear: no mask eliminates risk. Snorkeling is not a benign activity. The Seaview 180 is recreational equipment, not life-saving equipment. It's designed to support comfortable surface breathing, not to guarantee safety. That responsibility belongs to you—your awareness, your health, your judgment.

What I Do Differently Now

I've been snorkeling for years, and I still check myself against this list every time I get in the water:

  • I wait after flying. If I've just arrived from a long flight, I spend the first day or two exploring on land or doing shallow wading. The ocean will still be there.
  • I test my gear first. Before I head out to the reef, I float in chest-deep water and breathe through my mask for a few minutes. I pay attention to how it feels. If anything seems off, I don't go deeper.
  • I stay where I can stand—until I'm confident. Almost all incidents happen in water over the snorkeler's head. I get comfortable in shallow water first, then venture out slowly.
  • I listen to my body. If I feel unexpectedly short of breath, I don't push through. I remove the mask, roll onto my back, breathe slowly, and head in. That's not weakness—that's wisdom.
  • I watch my buddy, and they watch me. SI-ROPE can be silent. A buddy who knows what to look for—sudden stillness, floating face-down without movement—can make the difference.

The Turtle Moment, Reclaimed

I still get that thrill every time a sea turtle appears out of the blue. But now I understand that the turtle moment depends on something invisible: a steady, easy breath. When your gear and your body are in sync, you're not fighting for air—you're floating in awe.

That's the experience we're trying to protect. Not by pretending the risks don't exist, but by understanding them, respecting them, and designing gear that gives you one less thing to worry about.

The ocean will always ask something of us. A little humility, a little preparation, a little attention to the science. In return, it shows us worlds we can barely imagine.
