What the Animals Taught Me
Sea turtles don't have this problem. They can seal their eyes and nostrils completely, and they can adjust their whole body position to slip through currents without a fight. I watched one green sea turtle off the coast of Maui rest on a coral head for almost twenty minutes. It barely moved. Its eyes were closed. It wasn't fighting anything.
That's when I started thinking differently about my mask seal. A good seal isn't about clamping something tight against your face. It's about creating a balance between the pressure inside the mask and the pressure of the water outside. Too tight, and you distort the silicone. Too loose, and you get gaps. The sweet spot is somewhere in between, where the skirt conforms naturally to your skin without being forced.
Fish gills taught me something too. They don't resist water-they direct it. Gills are designed to let oxygen pass through while keeping water out of the fish's internal body. The principle is selective permeability. Your mask skirt works the same way. If it's clean, free of oils, and properly seated, it will let negative pressure hold it in place without needing to be strapped down like a vise.
What I Do Now Before Every Snorkel
I've developed a little routine over the years. It takes about two minutes, and it's saved me from countless leaky sessions. Here's what works for me:
- Wash the skirt with mild soap before I put it on. Baby shampoo works great. Rinse it well, then dry the skirt and my face completely. Sunscreen and natural oils are the enemy of a good seal.
- Test the fit without the strap. I press the mask gently against my face and inhale slightly through my nose. If it stays in place, the skirt is sealing correctly. If it falls off, the fit is wrong, and no amount of strap tension will fix it.
- Position the strap high, above my ears, and keep it at medium tension. If I can feel the mask digging into my face or leaving marks, it's too tight.
- Clear all hair away from the skirt edge. A single strand of hair can create a tiny channel that lets water seep in. This is especially important if you have long hair or facial hair.
- Breathe slow and steady. I inhale for four counts, exhale for four counts. This stabilizes the pressure inside the mask and reduces the chance of a leak starting at the nose bridge.
The Full-Face Mask Question
Full-face masks have become really popular, and I get why. They offer a wider field of view, and you can breathe through your nose, which feels more natural. The Seaview 180 is designed specifically for surface snorkeling and is engineered to reduce CO₂ buildup through separate inhalation and exhalation channels. That's a real improvement over earlier designs.
But the Snorkel Safety Study raised some flags that I think are worth paying attention to. Among the near-drowning survivors they surveyed, 38% were using a full-face mask. And of those, 90% considered the mask a contributing factor to their trouble. That doesn't mean full-face masks are inherently dangerous. It means they require careful fit, low breathing resistance, and awareness of your own limits.
If you use a full-face mask, here's what I'd recommend:

- Test it in shallow water where you can stand up easily.
- Exit the water immediately if you feel short of breath, dizzy, or unusually fatigued.
- Wait a couple of days after a long flight before snorkeling. The study found evidence that the mild oxygen deprivation experienced during air travel might temporarily affect lung membranes, making them more vulnerable under stress.
A Simple Pre-Snorkel Checklist
I've started running through this checklist before every session, whether I'm using a traditional mask or a full-face design. It keeps me grounded and lets me focus on what matters-the water, the fish, the quiet.
- Rinse and dry your face and the mask skirt.
- Test the seal without the strap.
- Adjust the strap to medium tension, high on the back of your head.
- Clear all hair away from the skirt.
- Breathe slow and steady for the first few minutes underwater.
- Know your limits. Stay where you can touch the bottom comfortably. If you have any heart or respiratory issues, check with a doctor before going out.
- Exit immediately if you feel any shortness of breath, dizziness, or unusual fatigue.
Where Gear Is Headed
I'm excited about what's coming. Engineers are starting to look at hydrophobic coatings that repel water from the mask interior. Some concepts involve silicone skirts that adjust their shape based on pressure and temperature. These are small steps, but they point toward a future where your mask works with the environment instead of against it.
