What Nobody Told Me About Learning to Snorkel (But Should Have)

But now add a snorkel.

This isn't some obscure theory. It's a recognized condition called Snorkel-Induced Rapid Onset Pulmonary Edema, or SI-ROPE. And a major study published by the State of Hawai'i Department of Health in 2021 found it's a common factor in snorkel-related drownings and near-drownings.

What does that mean for a beginner? It means that the snorkel you choose-and how you use it-matters more than almost anything else.

What the Research Actually Found

The Hawai'i study tested 50 different snorkel devices. They measured how much negative pressure each one required to inhale at normal breathing rates. The results were all over the map. Some snorkels barely added any resistance. Others required the same effort as trying to breathe through a clogged straw while someone gently pushes on your chest.

Here's the scary part: experienced snorkel technicians who inspected the devices beforehand correctly guessed which ones had high resistance only 26% of the time. You cannot tell by looking. You can't tell by how it feels on land. The resistance only becomes obvious when you're in the water, face-down, already dealing with the natural sensations of immersion.

The study also found that nearly 40% of near-drowning incidents involved full-face masks, and 90% of those users believed the mask contributed to their trouble. Inexperience wasn't the culprit-these happened to experienced swimmers and snorkelers too.

This matters because snorkeling looks easy. It looks like you're just floating. But your body is doing real work, and your gear makes that work either manageable or dangerous.

What to Actually Look For in Your First Snorkel

Here's what matters:

  • Bore size. The narrowest point in any snorkel determines how hard you'll work. Bigger is almost always better. Avoid anything with weird constrictions near the mouthpiece.
  • Simplicity. Traditional snorkels with fewer valves often have lower resistance than fancy dry-top designs. Don't assume more features mean better breathing.
  • Test before you trust. Breathe through the snorkel on land. Take big, full inhales at the rate you'd use if you were swimming against a current. If any resistance appears, that's a red flag.
  • Full-face masks require caution. If you choose one, make sure it separates incoming and outgoing air. Ours does. But no mask eliminates risk entirely. Practice removing it in shallow water before you go anywhere deep.

Also worth noting: if you have any heart or lung condition-even one that doesn't bother you day-to-day-talk to a doctor before snorkeling. The study found heart issues in 44% of the deaths they reviewed. Many were subclinical. Don't guess.

Ten Steps for Safer Snorkeling (Based on Data, Not Vibes)

The Hawai'i Department of Health's Snorkeling Safety Guide, written by the same researchers, offers recommendations grounded in real evidence. Here's my version, with a few additions from my own time in the water.

  1. If you can't swim, don't snorkel. Not "learn first." Just don't go where you can't touch bottom.
  2. Stay where you can stand comfortably. Build confidence in waist-deep water before moving deeper.
  3. Snorkel with a buddy-and brief them. Tell your buddy: "If I stop responding or look tired, get me to shore immediately. Don't wait for me to wave."
  4. Check your position every 30 seconds. Currents are silent. You can drift far without noticing.
  5. Wait 2-3 days after a long flight. The study couldn't prove air travel is a risk factor, but the physiology strongly suggests it matters. Your lungs may need time to recover from cabin pressure.
  6. Don't push through shortness of breath. If breathing feels hard, stop. Remove your mask. Roll onto your back. Get out immediately.
  7. Don't exercise through the snorkel. It's for relaxed observation, not a workout. Swimming hard while breathing through a tube is a known trigger.
  8. Practice in a pool or bathtub. Put the mask on. Float. Breathe. Get comfortable with the feeling before you go to open water.
  9. Listen to your body. If you feel panic, there's likely a physical reason. Remove the snorkel first, then figure out the rest.
  10. Know that safety is your choice. The study authors put it bluntly: responsibility lies with the snorkeler. That's not a warning. It's empowerment. You get to decide what gear feels right, what conditions you're comfortable in, and when to turn back.

Snorkeling is one of the most incredible ways to experience the ocean. It's quiet. It's intimate. It shows you a world that most people only see in documentaries.

But it's not magic. It's physics, physiology, and good gear choices. The more you understand how your body and your equipment interact, the safer and more joyful every outing becomes.
