I've been a water person my whole life. Surfing, kayaking, paddleboarding, diving—if it involves saltwater and a heartbeat, I'm in. So when I booked my first all-inclusive snorkeling vacation, I thought I had it figured out. Grab a mask off the rack, jump on the boat, float over some coral. Easy.
Turns out, I was missing something important. Not about the ocean—I know the ocean. But about the gear that gets handed to you on those trips. And about the physics of breathing through a tube that nobody really talks about.
The Convenience That Costs You
All-inclusive packages are brilliant at making things look simple. They hand you a mask, point you at the water, and promise paradise. What they don't hand you is information about that mask's internal design. Here's the thing: you cannot tell by looking whether a snorkel is safe to breathe through.
A major study out of Hawai‘i tested 50 different snorkels and found huge variation in how much resistance they create when you inhale. Some required nearly three times the effort of others. When experienced technicians tried to guess which ones were high-resistance just by examining them, they guessed correctly only about a quarter of the time. If trained people can't tell, how would you know the mask on that resort rack is okay?
What Happens When You Fight Your Snorkel
Every time you inhale through a snorkel, your lungs have to work against resistance. That creates negative pressure inside your chest—basically a vacuum. Under the right conditions, that vacuum can pull fluid from your blood vessels into your lungs. Doctors call it Rapid Onset Pulmonary Edema, or ROPE. When it happens while snorkeling, it's called SI-ROPE.
Here's what survivors describe feeling, and it looks nothing like a typical drowning scene:
- Sudden shortness of breath
- Overwhelming fatigue, loss of strength
- A sense of panic or doom
- Diminishing consciousness
There's no splashing, no thrashing, no cry for help. Just a quiet disappearance while floating face-down. The study found that almost all near-drowning events happened where the person couldn't touch bottom. And lack of swimming experience was rarely the cause—many victims were experienced snorkelers.
Why Full-Face Masks Need Extra Caution
Full-face masks are everywhere on all-inclusive trips. They're easy and comfortable. But they come with trade-offs that aren't obvious at first glance. In the Hawai‘i study, 38% of near-drowning survivors were using a full-face mask, and 90% of those said the mask contributed to their trouble.
The reason? In an emergency, you can't quickly get out of a full-face mask. You can't spit out a mouthpiece. You can't clear the tube with a sharp exhale. And if a one-way valve fails—which happens—you can end up rebreathing carbon dioxide. The study was blunt: these masks "cannot be removed easily in urgent situations even with quick release features."
Who Gets Into Trouble?
This part surprised me. It's not beginners panicking. One-quarter of the snorkeling deaths studied involved freedivers and spearfishermen—people who are totally comfortable in the water. What actually matters are three things:
- Pre-existing health conditions. 44% of victims had cardiac issues that raised pressure in their hearts, often undiagnosed.
- Recent long flights. Hours of mild hypoxia in airplane cabins may temporarily weaken the lungs' protective barriers.
- Exertion. Swimming against currents, covering long distances, or just pushing harder than normal.
The typical victim was a visitor over 50, visiting Hawai‘i, who seemed perfectly healthy. That could be any of us on a vacation.

Six Tips for Your Next Snorkeling Trip
Here's what I do now, and what I'd recommend to anyone heading to the tropics:
- Bring your own mask. You wouldn't borrow shoes for a hike. Your snorkel is your lifeline. At minimum, test the rental by taking a deep breath through it while standing. If it feels hard, it will feel worse when you're horizontal.
- Wait a couple days after flying. The Hawai‘i study recommends waiting 2–3 days after arrival by air before snorkeling. Your lungs need time to recover from the dry, low-pressure cabin environment.
- Know your health. If you have high blood pressure, any history of heart issues, or respiratory conditions, check with a doctor before you go. The risk is real.
- Stay where you can touch bottom. Almost all incidents happened where the person couldn't stand. Hang out in shallow, comfortable water until you're confident.
- Watch for shortness of breath. If you suddenly feel tired, weak, or short of breath, remove your mask immediately. Float on your back. Breathe slowly. Signal for help. Do not push through it.
- Buddy up and check often. Snorkel with a friend. Look at each other every 30 seconds. SI-ROPE can happen silently.
The Bottom Line
Snorkeling isn't a high-risk activity, but it's not zero-risk either. The Hawai‘i study put it plainly: "Recreational snorkeling is not a benign, low-risk activity. This is true both for experienced and inexperienced swimmers and snorkelers."
What I took away from all this research is that most of the risk is manageable. It comes down to awareness, good equipment, and a little patience. So next time you book that all-inclusive package, think about what's inside the mask they're handing you. Pack your own Seaview 180. Give yourself a day to adjust. And treat every snorkel like the gift it is—not a guarantee.
