The numbers back this up. In the Hawai‘i medical examiner review, 44% of snorkel-related drowning cases showed signs of cardiac conditions that likely increased pressure in the lungs. And among near-drowning survivors studied, all but one were over 50 years old. Many were experienced swimmers. Inexperience wasn’t the problem—physiology was.
