What I Wish Someone Had Told Me About Snorkeling on Private Charters

I've been on more private charters than I can count. The kind where you pull away from the dock before the sun is fully up, coffee in hand, the boat cutting through glassy water toward a reef you've only seen on a map. It's one of my favorite things in the world. But over the years, I've learned something that changed how I approach every single trip.

Most of us step onto those boats with a quiet assumption: that because we're with a captain, because we're in a group, because we've done this before, we're safe. The data says otherwise. And the risk isn't where most people think it is.

The Numbers That Made Me Stop and Think

In Hawai'i, between 2014 and 2023, snorkeling accounted for more visitor drownings than any other ocean activity. More than swimming. More than surfing. More than scuba diving. Nearly 200 visitors died while snorkeling. And here's the part that surprised me: the majority could swim. Most had snorkeled before. They weren't inexperienced or reckless. They were people like you and me.

The 2021 Snorkel Safety Study identified a phenomenon called Snorkel Induced Rapid Onset Pulmonary Edema, or SI-ROPE. It sounds clinical, but the mechanism is simple. Every time you inhale through a snorkel, you create negative pressure in your chest. If that pressure is high enough-especially with a snorkel that creates resistance-it can pull fluid from your capillaries into your lungs. Your own lungs fill with fluid. You don't have to inhale water to drown.

What Happens on a Typical Charter

I've watched this pattern play out more times than I like to admit. The boat anchors at a spot that looks calm. Everyone grabs a mask and snorkel from the bin of shared gear. The crew gives a quick briefing: don't touch the coral, watch for boat traffic, stay together. People slip into the water and spread out.

Within minutes, several risk factors line up without anyone noticing:

  • The gear is a wildcard. The study tested 50 different snorkels and found that resistance varied dramatically. Even trained technicians could guess which snorkels were high-resistance only 26% of the time. On a charter, you're trusting equipment used by hundreds of strangers.
  • Conditions change fast. That flat water you jumped into? Twenty minutes later, the current picks up. The boat drifts. Suddenly you're swimming harder than you planned. And exertion combined with breathing through resistance is precisely what triggers SI-ROPE.
  • The buddy system usually fails. Two people jump in together. One spots a turtle. The other follows a fish. Thirty seconds later, they're fifty feet apart. When trouble hits-and it can hit in under a minute-there's nobody close enough to help.

What Survivors Describe

I've read the research and talked to rescue personnel. The pattern is consistent, and it's nothing like what most people imagine drowning looks like.

There's no splashing. No thrashing. No calls for help. Instead, the sequence goes like this:

  1. Sudden shortness of breath
  2. Rapid fatigue and loss of strength
  3. A feeling of panic or doom
  4. Fast decline into unconsciousness

One survivor described it as "someone turned a dimmer switch on my brain." Another said they felt fine one moment, then couldn't lift their arms to signal. These were experienced swimmers. And in nearly every case, they were in water where they couldn't touch the bottom. You can't just stand up, remove your mask, and breathe. Meanwhile, people nearby continue snorkeling, completely unaware.

What I Changed About My Own Trips

I still book private charters. I love them. But I do things differently now.

Test your gear before you need it

Before the boat leaves the dock, put the snorkel in your mouth and breathe through it. Take deep breaths, fast breaths. If you feel resistance, ask for a different one. The simplest snorkels often create the least resistance. Don't be shy about swapping gear.

Warm up in shallow water

I never jump directly into deep water anymore. I ask the captain to let me spend a few minutes where I can stand. I get my breathing rhythm. I check the mask seal. I give my body time to adjust to immersion, which shifts blood into my chest and changes how my lungs work.

Check your location every thirty seconds

This sounds obsessive, but it works. I pick a landmark-a boat, a rock formation, a buoy-and I look for it every time I lift my head. If it's moved significantly, I'm drifting. Currents on the surface are often invisible until you're far from the boat.

Know the warning signs

Shortness of breath is not normal snorkeling. Fatigue that comes on suddenly is not "just getting tired." If you or your buddy experiences either, the correct response is not to rest and keep going. It's to remove the snorkel immediately, roll onto your back, signal for help, and get out. The window between early symptoms and unconsciousness can be terrifyingly short.

Wait a few days after flying

The study raised a strong possibility that long-haul air travel may temporarily compromise the lung's capillary membranes, making SI-ROPE more likely. The recommendation is to wait two to three days after a long flight before snorkeling. That means your charter on day one of vacation? Move it to day three or four.

What I Wish Charter Companies Knew

Private charters give access to incredible, uncrowded reefs. But that personal attention rarely extends to safety education about the specific risks of snorkeling. Most don't mention SI-ROPE. Most don't explain that drowning while snorkeling often looks nothing like drowning. Most don't tell guests that the equipment itself can cause harm.

The Snorkel Safety Study was clear: "Responsibility for personal safety lies primarily with the snorkeler." That's a heavy burden for someone excited about vacation, trusting the boat and gear to keep them safe.

I'd love to see every charter spend two minutes explaining SI-ROPE during the briefing. I'd love to see them let guests test snorkels before departure. Until that becomes standard, the responsibility falls on us.

A Note on the Gear

The Water Will Still Be There Tomorrow

I've snorkeled in some of the most beautiful places on earth-floating with sea turtles in Komodo, watching manta rays glide through moonlit water in Kona, drifting over coral gardens that looked like paintings. Those experiences are priceless.

But I've stopped treating snorkeling as a carefree activity. It requires attention, awareness, and respect for the fact that breathing through a tube while floating on the ocean is not the same as breathing on land.

The next time you book a charter, ask yourself: if something went wrong, would anyone notice in time? Would you recognize it happening to yourself? Would your buddy know what to look for?

Those aren't paranoid questions. They're the difference between a story you tell your friends and a story you don't get to tell at all.
