I’ve spent a ridiculous number of hours floating face-down in the ocean. I’ve watched turtles glide past, felt the cool press of current against my skin, and lost track of time in the quiet hum of the reef. Snorkeling has always felt like the most peaceful way to connect with the water. But a few years ago, I stumbled across some research that made me rethink everything I assumed about that simple act of breathing through a tube.

Almost all of them described the same sequence: sudden shortness of breath, a feeling of fatigue or weakness, a sense of doom, then fading consciousness. None of them recalled inhaling water. Many were experienced swimmers in their fifties or older. Several had underlying heart conditions they didn't know about. One survivor was diagnosed with a rare cardiac issue only after the incident.

- Know your health. If you're over 50 or have any history of heart or lung issues, check with a doctor before snorkeling, especially after a long flight.
- Wait after flying. The research suggests waiting a day or two after air travel to snorkel. Your lungs may need time to recover from the cabin environment.
- Stay where you can touch bottom. Most incidents happen where snorkelers can't stand. Build confidence in shallow water first.
- Watch your buddy closely. SI-ROPE is silent. If your friend seems unusually quiet, tired, or short of breath, call it in. Don't wait for obvious signs.
- Exit at the first sign of trouble. Shortness of breath is not something to push through. Remove your mask, roll onto your back, signal for help, get out.
Final Thought from the Water
I still love floating over a reef more than almost anything. But now I understand that the breath I take is a physical negotiation between my body, my gear, and the ocean. The water will always be wild-that's why we love it. But the equipment we choose should be grounded in real science, not marketing hype. Be curious. Be safe.
