What I Wish I Knew About Cold-Water Snorkeling Before My First Dive

I’ll never forget my first real cold-water snorkel. I’d spent years in warm tropical lagoons, where sliding into the ocean feels like stepping into a bathtub. When you hit cold water, your body doesn’t ease into it. Within the first two minutes, your heart rate jumps, your blood vessels tighten, and your breathing goes fast and shallow. It’s called the cold shock response. You can’t just will it away. But here’s what nobody told me: that rapid breathing also doubles how much air you’re pulling through your snorkel every minute.

Research from the Hawai‘i Snorkel Safety Study shows that a snorkeler at rest breathes about 10 to 12 liters of air per minute. During cold shock, that can easily double. And when you’re breathing faster through any snorkel, the resistance to inhalation goes up. The study measured negative pressures needed at high flow rates—some snorkels required over -5 cm of water pressure just to inhale. Add the fact that your chest is submerged a foot deep, which adds another -30 cm of pressure, and you’re suddenly working a lot harder than you realize.

This matters because the same study identified increased exertion as a major risk factor for something called Snorkel-Induced Rapid Onset Pulmonary Edema—basically, fluid building up in your lungs because of the strain. Cold water literally creates that exertion before you even start swimming.

The Wetsuit Squeeze You Don’t Feel

Here’s another thing I only figured out after a few cold sessions: your wetsuit affects your breathing. A 5mm suit fits snugly, and in cold water, you naturally tense up a bit. That combination restricts how deep you can breathe. Instead of easy belly breaths, you shift to shallow chest breathing. Your tidal volume—the amount of air per breath—drops, so you have to breathe faster to keep up.

Some cold-water studies suggest respiratory heat loss can account for 10 to 15 percent of your total heat loss during extended exposure. So every breath is costing you warmth, on top of everything else.

In water below 15°C, a snorkeler in a 5mm wetsuit can usually stay comfortable for about 60 to 90 minutes of moderate activity. But that window shrinks fast if you add exertion or if your suit isn’t sealing well around the neck and wrists.

Smarter Gear Choices for Cold Water

After plenty of trial and error, here’s what I’ve landed on:

  • Prioritize low-resistance breathing. The simpler the snorkel, the less effort it takes to inhale. In cold water, that matters even more.   • Layer up, but smartly. A 5mm suit with a 3mm vest underneath traps air between layers, giving you better insulation without restricting movement as much as a single thick suit. Less restriction means easier breathing.
  • Don’t skimp on gloves and booties. Hands and feet lose heat quickly because of their surface area. Thicker gloves (5mm) are worth the loss of dexterity—you’ll thank yourself when you still have feeling in your fingers after 40 minutes.

What the Numbers Tell Us

The Hawai‘i Snorkel Safety Study looked at 32 snorkel-related deaths over two years. The water there is warm, but the underlying dynamics are universal. Nearly half of those deaths were judged very likely caused by hypoxia from pulmonary edema, not from inhaling water. And a quarter of the victims were experienced freedivers or spearfishers—people who know the water well. Inexperience wasn’t the main factor.

That tells me something important: even seasoned water folks can get into trouble when the respiratory demands of the situation exceed what their equipment and body can handle. Cold water amplifies those demands.

The study’s recommended safety messages are worth repeating:

  • If you suddenly feel short of breath, remove your mask, float on your back, and signal for help.
  • Avoid heavy exertion while breathing through a snorkel.
  • Wait a couple of days after a long flight before snorkeling—your blood oxygen levels may still be recovering.
  • Stay where you can comfortably touch bottom until you’re confident in your cold-water response.

The Real Lesson

Cold-water snorkeling isn’t just warm-water snorkeling with extra neoprene. It’s a fundamentally different experience. Your body works harder to stay warm, to breathe, and to manage the cold’s natural shock. That’s not something to fear—it’s something to respect.
