What I Learned About Snorkeling After That Tightness in My Chest

I’d been snorkeling for years before I understood what that tightness really meant. It happened on a trip to a freshwater spring—a place so clear you could count the pebbles on the bottom. I slipped into the water, mask on, and within ten minutes felt a heaviness in my lungs. Not pain. Just… effort. Like my breath had to work harder than usual.

I ignored it. Stayed out another half hour. It wasn’t until months later, reading through research from the Hawai‘i Snorkel Safety Study, that I realized what I’d felt was my body waving a red flag. And that flag matters differently in freshwater than it does in saltwater.

The Invisible Weight of Freshwater

Here’s something I never see in travel blogs: freshwater is less buoyant than saltwater. That means you float lower. Your chest sits deeper in the water column. Every inch of depth adds about two and a half centimeters of pressure against your ribcage. When you’re face-down in a spring, your lungs might be working against 20 to 30 extra centimeters of water pressure compared to the same mask in the ocean.

That doesn’t sound like much until you add a snorkel. And not all snorkels are created equal.

Why Your Snorkel Matters More Than You Think

The Hawai‘i team tested fifty different snorkel devices. They found that resistance varied wildly between designs, and even experienced technicians could only guess correctly about a quarter of the time which ones were high-resistance just by looking at them. Some snorkels required over 15 centimeters of negative pressure to breathe through at a normal rate.

Combine that with the extra pressure from freshwater immersion, and your lungs are pulling against a vacuum that can reach 40 to 50 centimeters of water pressure with every single breath. That’s what researchers call the perfect setup for a condition called Snorkel Induced Rapid Onset Pulmonary Edema—or SI-ROPE.

What SI-ROPE Actually Feels Like

SI-ROPE happens when the negative pressure in your chest pulls fluid from your blood vessels into your lungs. You don’t aspirate water. You don’t struggle or gasp. Instead, you feel:

  • Shortness of breath that creeps up slowly
  • Fatigue and loss of strength
  • A vague sense that something is wrong
  • Then fading consciousness

The study reviewed 32 snorkel-related deaths and found that nearly half were “very likely” caused by this mechanism. Nearly all the survivors interviewed described the same sequence—quiet, without drama, without anyone noticing until it was almost too late.

The Freshwater Difference

Here’s the part that changed how I think about gear: because freshwater requires your lungs to work harder from the start, any additional resistance from your mask or snorkel has a bigger impact. A mask that feels fine in the ocean can push you into dangerous territory in a spring.

That’s why I’ve started testing every piece of gear in both environments before I trust it. If I feel any extra effort breathing in saltwater, I know it’ll be magnified in freshwater.

What I Do Differently Now

  1. Test before I trust. I always try new gear in saltwater first, where buoyancy helps. If it feels easy there, I’ll try it in freshwater. If not, I go back to the drawing board.
  2. Wait after flying. The research suggests that long flights can temporarily weaken the membranes in your lungs, making SI-ROPE more likely. I now wait two to three days after air travel before snorkeling—especially in freshwater.
  3. Choose gear designed to reduce resistance. The Seaview 180 mask was engineered with separate airflow channels intended to minimize the work of breathing compared to earlier full-face designs. That engineering matters more in freshwater than most people realize.
  4. Listen to the whisper. SI-ROPE doesn’t start with a gasp. It starts with “I’m a little more tired than I should be.” That’s the signal to stop, remove the mask, float on your back, and head in.

It’s Not About Fear—It’s About Respect

I still love freshwater snorkeling. Maybe more than ever, because I understand it now. The quiet clarity of a spring, the way light filters through tannic water, the ancient limestone formations below—it’s a different world from the coral reefs I grew up on.

But it demands more. That’s not a warning; it’s just a fact. The same way you respect a strong current or a choppy swell, you respect the invisible load on your lungs. You choose your gear thoughtfully. You pay attention to how your body feels. And you never ignore that first whisper of “something isn’t right.”

Because the best snorkeling experience isn’t about how far you go or how much you see. It’s about coming home safe enough to do it again tomorrow.
