What I Learned About Snorkeling After Almost Drowning—And Why It Changed Everything

I've spent more hours on the water than I can count. Surfing. Kayaking. Paddleboarding. Freediving. And of course, snorkeling. I always thought of snorkeling as the easy one. The activity you do when you want to relax and look at fish without holding your breath. The beginner-friendly option.

Then I read the Snorkel Safety Study-a deep dive (pun intended) into why so many people drown while snorkeling in Hawai'i. And what I found made me rethink everything I thought I knew. Not just about snorkeling, but about the gear we use and how our bodies respond to it.

The Hidden Physics of Breathing Through a Tube

When you're snorkeling, you're lying face down. Your chest is submerged, which adds about 30 cm of water pressure to your lungs compared to standing on land. That's one thing. But here's the part most people don't think about: every time you inhale through that snorkel, you're creating a vacuum in your lungs. The tighter the snorkel's bore or the more complex its valves, the harder you have to suck to get air.

The study tested 50 different snorkel designs at a flow rate similar to moderate swimming. The results were wild. Resistance varied a lot, and even experienced testers couldn't guess which snorkels would be high-resistance just by looking at them. Some required negative pressures greater than -5 cmH₂O per breath. Over a minute of swimming, that cumulative negative pressure can exceed 350 cm of water pressure.

The survivors described a pattern: sudden shortness of breath, then fatigue, then loss of strength, then a feeling of panic and doom. It happens fast. In minutes, not hours.

How Freediving Is Different

Freediving works on a completely different principle. You take one breath, hold it, and descend. Your airway is closed. There's no sustained negative pressure from breathing through a tube. Yes, freediving has its own risks-shallow water blackout, hypoxia, barotrauma. But those are acute events, not a slow physiological drain.

This is the gear gap. Snorkeling gear creates a continuous respiratory load that affects your lungs cumulatively over minutes. Freediving gear removes that load entirely during the breath-hold phase. They're not the same activity. They're not even in the same category.

  1. Choose your gear carefully. High-resistance snorkels can't be identified by sight. Before you buy, try breathing through it. Inhale large volumes of air and feel for any tightness or restriction.
  2. Shortness of breath is a red flag. If you feel short of breath while snorkeling, remove the mask and snorkel immediately. Get on your back, breathe slowly, and get out of the water.
  3. Wait after flying. The study couldn't confirm a statistical link, but the physiology is compelling. Long flights may subtly compromise lung capillary integrity. Many safety experts recommend waiting 2-3 days after long flights before snorkeling.
  4. Don't push through discomfort. Snorkeling isn't like running. SI-ROPE can escalate from discomfort to unconsciousness in minutes.
  5. Know your health limits. If you have a heart condition, respiratory issues, or any history of lung problems, talk to your doctor before snorkeling.

A New Respect for the Surface

I still love snorkeling. I'll never stop. But I've stopped thinking of it as the "safe beginner activity." It's a distinct, physiologically demanding activity with its own risks-different from freediving, different from swimming, different from scuba. Understanding those risks isn't about fear. It's about respect.

The ocean is generous with its beauty, but it's unsparing in its physics. Good gear helps. Informed choices matter more. So whether you're floating over a reef in Hawai'i, exploring a kelp forest in California, or just starting out in a calm bay, take a moment to appreciate what your body and your gear are doing together.
