What a 20-Minute Snorkel in Sardinia Taught Me About Breathing

The Snorkel Safety Study reviewed 32 snorkeling-related deaths and found that nearly half were judged “very likely” caused by hypoxia from SI-ROPE. Most of those victims were found floating face-down. And here’s the part that really hit me: 75% of those victims were visitors-people who had recently traveled.

Long flights can mess with your body in subtle ways. Cabin air is less oxygen-rich. You’re dehydrated. Your cardiovascular system is readjusting. If you combine that with a snorkel that creates higher resistance, plus some exertion against a current, you’ve set the table for trouble.
