Swim parallel, not pursuit
Want longer viewing time and a better chance of a calm encounter? Don’t charge from behind. Instead, angle yourself so you’re moving parallel to the whale shark’s direction. Keep your kick compact and steady. Let the animal do what it does—move smoothly and predictably—while you hold a relaxed line.
Make the first minute a breathing check
Before you worry about photos, give yourself a minute to settle in. Float, breathe slowly, and notice your body. If you’re already breathing hard in the first minute, that’s your early warning. Reset, signal your buddy, or take a break. Offshore excitement doesn’t usually fade on its own—you have to manage it.
If you get unexpectedly short of breath: treat it like a stop sign

- Get support and exit as soon as practical

Visitors, travel, and timing: don’t stack stress on top of stress
