I remember my first solo snorkel trip like it was yesterday. I’d flown into Kona, grabbed a mask and fins from a rental shop, and hit the water within hours of landing. The water was warm, the fish were everywhere, and I felt like I’d stumbled into a postcard. But about twenty minutes in, I started feeling weird-not panicked, just… heavy. My arms felt like lead, and each breath felt like I was sipping air through a coffee stirrer. I got out, sat on the sand, and chalked it up to jet lag. It wasn't until years later, after reading the Hawai‘i Snorkel Safety Study, that I realized what had actually happened. My lungs were quietly flooding, and I didn’t even know it.
The study calls it Snorkel-Induced Rapid Onset Pulmonary Edema, or SI-ROPE. Fancy name for something simple: when you breathe through a snorkel, you create negative pressure in your chest. If that pressure gets too high-especially when you’re floating face-down in saltwater-fluid can leak from your blood vessels into your lungs. You don’t choke or cough; you just slowly run out of oxygen. For a solo traveler, there’s no one to notice you’ve stopped kicking.
The Snorkel You Can’t Judge by Looks
One of the most humbling things I learned is that you can’t tell a high-resistance snorkel just by staring at it. The study tested 50 different models-dry snorkels, wet snorkels, full-face masks-and found that resistance varied widely. Even the researchers, who knew snorkels inside and out, couldn’t guess which ones would be tough to breathe through. That drove home something I now take seriously: always test your gear in shallow water before heading out. Put the mask on, breathe deeply, and pay attention to how it feels. If it takes effort to inhale, that snorkel isn't for you.

The Jet Lag Your Lungs Feel
Here’s something I changed after reading the study: I now wait at least two days after a long flight before I snorkel. The study didn’t prove a direct link between air travel and SI-ROPE, but the physiology makes sense. At 35,000 feet, cabin pressure is lower, oxygen is thinner, and your blood vessels can tighten slightly. Add dehydration from dry cabin air, and your lungs are less resilient. If you’ve flown across time zones, your body is already stressed. Give it time to recalibrate before asking it to perform underwater.
I’ve started spending my first day in a new place doing low-key things-walking the beach, reading tide charts, just getting a feel for the water. It doesn’t feel like wasted time; it feels like respect.
What Solo Snorkelers Need to Remember
Snorkeling alone is different. You don’t have a buddy to tap you on the shoulder and ask if you’re okay. So you have to be your own safety net. Here are the things I keep in mind every time I go out solo:
- Test your gear before you leave the beach. Float in shallow water and take ten slow, deep breaths. If anything feels tight or hard, swap the snorkel.
- Know your health. If you’re over 50 or have any history of heart issues, check with a doctor before snorkeling. The study found that nearly half of snorkel-related deaths involved people with cardiac conditions-many of them undiagnosed.
- Stay where you can touch bottom until you’re confident. Almost all incidents happened in water over the snorkeler’s head. Start shallow, get comfortable, then venture deeper.
- Don’t push yourself. The study documented cases where people got into trouble while swimming against a current or doing laps while snorkeling. Exertion increases the negative pressure in your chest. If you feel short of breath, stop, float on your back, and head in.
- Check your position every 30 seconds. Currents can drift you without you noticing. Pick a landmark on shore and look up often.
The Silence You Need to Respect
The thing that sticks with me most from the study is how quiet these incidents are. Of the 32 snorkel-related deaths reviewed, nearly all victims were found floating face-down. No thrashing, no yelling-just a quiet fade. That’s the scariest part of solo snorkeling, but it’s also why preparation matters so much. When you know what can happen, you can take steps to keep it from happening to you.
I’ve learned to listen to my body in a way I never did before. If I feel suddenly tired, or my breathing feels labored, I don’t push through. I take off my mask, roll onto my back, and breathe. I let the ocean hold me up. That’s not weakness-it’s wisdom.
A Better Way to Float Alone
I still love snorkeling solo. There’s a stillness to it that you can’t get with a group-just you and the water and whatever creatures decide to swim by. But I approach it differently now. I choose my gear carefully. I give my body time to adjust after flying. I stay aware of my breathing and my surroundings. And I never, ever try to prove anything to the ocean.
