The Snorkeling Vacation Plan That Starts Before You Land

Most people start planning a snorkeling trip with the hotel and the reef. I start with the flight and the first breath after landing. That order changed for me after reading the Snorkel Safety Study and the 2022 report in the Hawaii Journal of Health & Social Welfare. The state's own guide says recreational snorkeling is not a benign, low-risk activity. So I plan water time the way I would plan a hike at elevation.

Your lungs land before you do. Cabin pressure during air travel keeps blood oxygen lower than at sea level. The 2022 Hawaii journal report reviewed hypobaric chamber studies and found pulmonary artery pressure and vascular resistance increase in response to the low grade hypoxemia of commercial cabin altitude. The Snorkel Safety Study did not confirm a direct tie between recent long flights and snorkel induced rapid onset pulmonary edema, but the report states the data and physiological functions strongly support that possibility. The practical rule from the state guide is to wait two to three days after extended air travel before snorkeling.

Give yourself two non-snorkeling days

I treat those two days as a built-in buffer. Day one means landing, drinking water, resting, walking the beach, and staying out of the water. Day two means testing gear in a pool or calm shallows where I can stand. Day three starts with a short, gentle snorkel. Day four and beyond, I consider deeper water, always with a buddy.

Those two quiet days are your altitude adjustment period. The reef will still be there.

Pick a mask by a number you cannot see

Inhalation resistance is the variable nobody sees. The 2022 journal report tested 50 snorkels at a flow rate of 3 liters per second and set high resistance at negative pressure greater than -5 cmH2O. Two technicians tried to predict which snorkels would test high by inspection alone. They guessed correctly for only 26 percent of the high resistance devices. For the low resistance devices, they were right 80 percent of the time. You cannot size up resistance by looking at a snorkel.

Resistance matters because negative pressure inside the lungs can pull fluid into the air spaces. The state report calls the resulting condition snorkel induced rapid onset pulmonary edema, or SI-ROPE. The typical sequence runs: sudden shortness of breath, fatigue and loss of strength, a feeling of panic, then diminishing consciousness. It often shows without the splashing people expect from a drowning.

The survey found 38 percent of reported incidents used a full face mask, and 90 percent of that group considered the mask a contributing factor. Plan water time around effort, not distance

The survivor data from the Snorkel Safety Study show almost all events happened where the person could not touch bottom. The people in trouble were not weak swimmers. Lack of swimming or snorkeling experience was rarely a factor. The common thread was increased exertion while breathing through a snorkel.

Waves, currents, cold water, and long swims all make your lungs work harder. On the water, I keep the first session short and easy. I check my location every 30 seconds. I do not swim hard against current, and I do not increase effort while breathing through the snorkel.

If shortness of breath, fatigue, or a sudden sense of panic shows up, the plan changes right away. Remove the mask, roll onto your back, breathe slowly and deeply, signal for help, and get out. The state guide says the same. Do not push through that feeling.

Practice where you can stand

Proper sizing and a good seal matter. The V3 comes in small, medium, and large. The mask should sit against your face without the straps wrenched tight. Before your first reef session, wear it on dry land for a few minutes and breathe normally. Then wade into waist-deep water, bend forward, and float face down while staying where you can stand.

Practice the quick-release clips, the chin drain, and removing the mask with one hand. If you are helping a child, stay within arm's reach. Adult supervision is recommended for children.

  1. Wait two to three days after long air travel.
  2. Swim at a lifeguarded beach. If you cannot swim, do not snorkel.
  3. Buddy up and keep an eye on your buddy.
  4. Stay in water where you can touch bottom until you are confident.
  5. Check your location every 30 seconds.
  6. If breathing feels off, remove the mask, get on your back, signal, and get out.
  7. Do not increase exertion while breathing through a snorkel.
