The Snorkeling Emergency Nobody Talks About (And How to Handle It)

  6. Exit the water. Even if you start feeling better, the underlying problem can persist and worsen if you stay in.

If you’re the buddy watching, don’t wait for obvious signs of distress. If someone stops moving or seems spaced out, check on them immediately. A simple “hey, you okay?” can break the cycle before it spirals.

Once you’re on dry land, keep the person warm, offer oxygen if you have it, and get a medical evaluation. The good news is that this kind of pulmonary edema often resolves within hours with proper care, and most survivors show no lasting damage. But they made it because someone recognized the invisible emergency and acted.

A Few Habits I’ve Folded Into Every Trip

I also started following one piece of advice that sounded odd at first but now makes total sense: if you’ve just gotten off a long flight, give your body a couple of days to adjust before you push yourself snorkeling. The Snorkel Safety Study team flagged that prolonged cabin pressure might subtly affect your lungs’ delicate membranes, making SI-ROPE more likely in the first 48-72 hours after landing. So now I fly in, relax, and save the serious reef time for later in the trip.

My “first-aid kit” for snorkeling today looks a lot different than a box of bandages. It’s more of a mental checklist I run through every single time:
