I’ve always thought of snorkeling as the easiest way to disappear into the ocean. No board, no tank, no complicated rig-just you, a mask, and a tube, floating weightless over a reef. For years, that’s exactly what it was for me: pure, simple escape.
Then I stumbled onto some research from Hawai‘i that made me rethink everything I thought I knew about this sport. Not in a scary, fearmongering way-more like a quiet, “wait, why didn’t anyone tell me this?” kind of way.
It turns out that the way we drown while snorkeling is often nothing like the dramatic splashing you see in movies. It’s silent. It’s fast. And the snorkel itself can play a role you’d never guess.
What the Data Actually Says
Between 2014 and 2023, more visitors drowned while snorkeling in Hawai‘i than while swimming, surfing, scuba diving, and boating combined. That number stopped me mid-sip of my coffee. I’d always assumed snorkeling was the safest thing you could do in the water-low exertion, low risk. But the numbers tell a different story.
The Hawai‘i Snorkel Safety Study-a real, peer-reviewed investigation published in 2021-dug into 32 snorkel-related deaths and a bunch of near-misses. What they found was a condition called Snorkel Induced Rapid Onset Pulmonary Edema, or SI-ROPE. Basically, when you inhale through a snorkel, you’re creating negative pressure in your chest. Over time, especially with a snorkel that’s harder to breathe through, that pressure can pull fluid from your blood vessels into your lungs. You can drown without ever swallowing water.
Scary, right? But also empowering. Because once you know about it, you can do something about it.
Why Your Snorkel Matters More Than You Think
The study tested 50 different snorkels at various breathing rates. Some required almost no effort to inhale. Others demanded way more negative pressure than you’d expect. And here’s the kicker: when experienced people tried to guess which snorkels were high-resistance just by looking at them, they were wrong 74% of the time for the high-resistance models. You simply cannot tell by appearance alone.

Here’s what SI-ROPE looks like in real life, according to the study:

- Diminishing consciousness-you might not even realize you’re in trouble
No coughing. No splashing. No obvious struggle. That’s why the study emphasizes that responsibility for safety lies with the snorkeler. Your buddy might not see it happening. You have to know the signs yourself.
What I Changed After Reading This
I don’t want to scare anyone away from snorkeling-it’s still one of my favorite things in the world. But I do want to share what I now do differently:
- Test your gear in shallow water first. Before you head out to a reef drop-off, spend time breathing through your snorkel while floating. If it feels tight or you have to work for air, swap it out.
- Stay where you can touch bottom until you’re fully comfortable. Nearly all the incidents in the study happened in water over the snorkeler’s head.
- Listen to your body. Shortness of breath isn’t just “being out of shape.” If you feel it, remove your mask, roll onto your back, and get out. Immediately.
- Wait after flying. The study couldn’t prove a link between air travel and SI-ROPE, but the physiology is compelling. A few hours of mild hypoxia at altitude can affect your lungs. Give yourself a day or two after a long flight before snorkeling.
- Know your health. A surprising number of victims had undiagnosed heart conditions. If you’re over 50 or have any concerns, check with your doctor before you go.
Full-Face Masks: A Note
The study included data on full-face masks. Among people who had near-drowning incidents, 38% were using a full-face mask-and 90% of those said the mask was a contributing factor. That doesn’t mean full-face masks are bad. It means they require extra attention to fit, to how you feel, and to knowing when to take them off. If you use one, make sure the seal is good, keep your movements gentle, and exit the water at the first sign of discomfort.

Snorkeling isn’t a “benign, low-risk activity.” The study says that outright. But knowing the risk is the first step to managing it. I still snorkel every chance I get. I just do it with more awareness-of my gear, my body, and the water around me.
