The Silent Signal: Why We Need to Rethink How Snorkelers Talk Underwater

I’ve been snorkeling long enough to know that the best moments happen when you’re completely absorbed. A sea turtle glides by. The sun breaks through the surface in shafts of gold. You forget there’s a world above the water. But I’ve also learned that those moments of total immersion come with a hidden risk—one that most of us don’t think about until it’s too late.

We rely on the buddy system. We give a thumbs-up, a wave, maybe a pointed finger toward a cool fish. But what happens when your buddy is in trouble and can’t make a sound? What if they’re already struggling to breathe, feeling weak, fading fast—and you’re just a few feet away, completely unaware?

I’m not trying to scare you. I’m trying to tell you about something I wish I’d understood sooner: underwater communication for snorkelers isn’t just about staying in touch. It’s about survival.

The Quiet Emergency Nobody Talks About

Most people think drowning looks dramatic. Splashing, yelling, arms flailing. But the reality is far more unsettling. The Snorkel Safety Study, a major research effort published in the Hawai‘i Journal of Health & Social Welfare, identified a condition called Snorkel-Induced Rapid Onset Pulmonary Edema, or SI-ROPE. It happens when the effort of breathing through a snorkel creates enough negative pressure to pull fluid into the lungs. The sequence is terrifyingly fast and almost silent:

  1. Sudden shortness of breath, fatigue, loss of strength
  2. Feeling of panic, doom, need for assistance
  3. Diminishing consciousness

The study’s authors put it bluntly: “It is difficult for an observer to distinguish between someone in distress and someone enjoying snorkeling.” That’s the problem. Your buddy could be right next to you, going through the early stages of SI-ROPE, and you’d have no idea. No shout. No thrash. Just a slow fade.

One statistic from the report really stuck with me: among near-drowning survivors who used full-face masks, 90% considered their mask a contributing factor. Not because the mask was badly designed, but because it made it harder to signal distress or get it off quickly. That’s a communication failure, not a gear failure.

What Fish Taught Me About Talking Underwater

I spend a lot of time just watching. Fish don’t have voices, but they talk constantly. Parrotfish flash colors to warn rivals. Clownfish twitch and chase to defend their anemone. Whales sing songs that travel for miles, each pod with its own dialect. Marine life has been solving the underwater communication problem for millions of years—without a single piece of electronics.

The lesson I took from them is simple: good communication is physical, instinctive, and pre-agreed. You don’t need a gadget to tell your buddy you’re in trouble. You need a signal that your body can make without thinking, and that their eyes can recognize without hesitation.

I’m not saying tech has no place. There are interesting developments in bone-conduction audio and low-frequency acoustic transmitters. But the ocean is unforgiving. Salt water, pressure changes, dead batteries—all of it can fail you. The most reliable communication device is still a well-trained buddy who knows what silent distress looks like.

Three Signals That Could Save a Life

Here’s what I’ve started doing with every buddy I swim with. It takes 30 seconds to agree on, and it’s backed by the kind of commonsense safety advice the Snorkel Safety Study recommends.

Before you get in the water, agree on three signals:

  • “I’m okay” - A slow thumbs-up, held for three full seconds. A quick flick doesn’t count.
  • “I need help” - Two sharp taps on your mask or chest. Hard enough to be seen, not just felt.
  • “Emergency” - Slap the water surface with an open palm, repeatedly. This one’s meant to attract attention fast.

Practice them once on land. Then use them in the water. They become muscle memory—something you can do even when your brain is foggy and your lungs feel tight.

During your snorkel, do a 30-second buddy check. The Hawai‘i Snorkeling Safety Guide says to check your location every 30 seconds. I extend that to checking your buddy. Lift your head, make eye contact, and if they’re not looking back, that’s your cue to get closer. Don’t assume they’re fine. Assume they need a check-in.

And if you feel off—get out. Shortness of breath, dizziness, unusual fatigue—these are warning signs. The best thing you can do is remove your mask, roll onto your back, and signal for help. There’s no shame in cutting a session short. I’ve done it. Every experienced snorkeler has. The water will still be there tomorrow.

What Gear Can—and Can’t—Do
