What the Numbers Tell Us

What the numbers don't show is how many of those deaths might have been prevented if someone nearby had known—really known—that something was wrong.

That's not a technology problem. It's an awareness problem. And a communication problem.

Practical Ideas for Safer Snorkeling

Kayakers carry whistles. Divers use tank bangers. Snorkelers deserve something simple and reliable too.

  • Voice amplification: A way to speak clearly while keeping your mask on, so you can say "I need a rest" without surfacing.

These aren't replacements for basics like swimming with a buddy or staying where you can touch bottom. They're backups. The same way you carry a spare fin strap or a backup mask strap.

What I've Learned

The ocean has taught me a lot of things over the years. One of them is that the most dangerous moments are often the quietest. SI-ROPE doesn't announce itself. It doesn't give you time to wave your arms. By the time you realize something's wrong, you may already be running out of strength.
