The majority of victims were over 50. But here’s what really caught my attention: lack of experience or swimming skill was rarely the cause. Neither was panic or swallowing water.

Instead, survivors described a quiet, terrifying sequence: sudden shortness of breath, growing fatigue, loss of strength, a feeling of doom, and then diminishing consciousness—without the splashing or flailing we associate with drowning. That’s the signature of SI-ROPE. It doesn’t look like drowning at all. It looks like someone enjoying a peaceful float, until they’re not.

Among near-drowning survivors studied, 38% were using full-face masks, and 90% of those users felt the mask contributed to their trouble. This doesn’t mean full-face masks are inherently unsafe—but their airflow dynamics can be more complex, and resistance can vary between models.

What This Means for Senior Snorkelers

If you’re over 50 and love snorkeling, please don’t read this and think you need to stop. The opposite is true. You just need to snorkel smarter.

Traditional lessons focus on clearing your mask, equalizing your ears, and using your fins. For seniors, I believe we need to add a new skill: understanding your own breath. Before you ever put your face in the water, practice breathing through your snorkel while standing in waist-deep water. Take three slow, relaxed breaths. If you feel any resistance—like you have to pull air—try a different snorkel. Your body will tell you before the ocean does.

I also recommend a post-flight rest period. The Hawai‘i study suggested that prolonged air travel may subtly affect the lung membranes. Many experts now recommend waiting two to three days after flying before snorkeling. Your body needs time to re-equilibrate.

And here’s one of the hardest lessons: shortness of breath is not something to push through. In snorkeling, it’s a signal to remove your mask, float on your back, and breathe freely. Get out of the water. There is no shame in ending a session early. The ocean will be there tomorrow.

A Pre-Trip Checklist for Senior Snorkelers
