Marine protected areas (MPAs) are the places that keep me coming back to the water. Whether I’m snorkeling over a coral garden, paddling a board along a reef edge, or poking around a rocky point by kayak, MPAs tend to feel like the ocean turned the volume up—more fish, more movement, more of that “wait… did you just see that?” kind of magic.
But here’s the part I want to say out loud, especially if you’re visiting a new coastline: protected doesn’t mean gentle, and it definitely doesn’t mean risk-free. In my experience, MPAs can actually nudge people into trouble because the snorkeling is so good you stay out longer, swim farther, and drift into deeper water almost without noticing.

And that’s where people get tripped up. A calm-looking bay can still have current. A “sheltered” cove can still have surge. Clear water can make distance feel short, even when you’ve swum way past your easy exit.
I treat MPAs the same way I treat a gorgeous hiking trail that everyone posts about: popularity doesn’t equal simplicity. You still need a plan.
A quick, honest safety reset: snorkeling isn’t a low-risk activity
One of the strongest messages from snorkeling safety research is also the least convenient: recreational snorkeling is not a benign, low-risk activity. That applies to beginners and strong swimmers alike.
There’s a common assumption that snorkel trouble mostly comes from swallowing water or being inexperienced. But survey findings in the Snorkel Safety Study point in a different direction: aspiration (inhaling water) was rarely the trigger in near-drowning incidents, and lack of snorkeling experience was rarely the factor that got people into trouble. Another point that matters a lot in MPAs: almost all events happened where the person could not touch bottom.
The research highlights a phenomenon called Snorkel-Induced Rapid Onset Pulmonary Edema (SI-ROPE), which has been identified as a common factor in snorkel-related drowning and near-drowning events. Risk factors associated with SI-ROPE include:
- The degree of resistance to inhalation created by the snorkel setup
- Certain pre-existing medical conditions
- Increased exertion
What makes SI-ROPE especially scary is how it can unfold. The study describes a typical sequence like this:
- Sudden shortness of breath, fatigue, loss of strength
- Feeling of panic or doom, needing assistance
- Diminishing consciousness
That’s one reason MPAs deserve extra respect. They’re so beautiful they can coax you into doing “just a little more” until your body says otherwise.
The MPA paradox: the reef rewards stillness—and so does your breathing
If I could bottle one skill that makes MPA snorkeling better, it’s this: slow down on purpose. Not in a vague, inspirational way. In a practical, “my fins barely move” way.
When you snorkel calmly, good things stack up fast:
- You kick less and reduce the chance of contacting coral

MPAs are not the place to test-drive unfamiliar equipment for the first time. One reason is simple: when something feels off—fogging, leaking, breathing feels “tight”—people often compensate by working harder. They kick more. They push through. They drift farther from the exit. And in an MPA, that can turn a mellow session into a problem fast.
Snorkel breathing resistance: it’s not always obvious
Snorkel research has shown that resistance to inhalation can vary widely depending on design features, and that visual inspection isn’t a reliable way to judge resistance. The Snorkeling Safety Guide notes that simpler snorkels often generate less resistance, but it also points out that hidden factors—like the narrowest point in the airflow path or valve design—can change how hard it feels to breathe.
Two practical tips from the guide are worth adopting as a habit:
- Inhale large volumes of air to get a feel for inspiratory resistance
- Try out your equipment in a safe environment first

Add a mild current and suddenly you’re farther from your start point than you expected—sometimes without feeling like you “worked” that hard to get there.
The Snorkel Safety Study notes it’s difficult for observers to spot trouble because snorkel incidents can happen quickly and without obvious struggle. That means you have to build your own guardrails.
These are the guardrails I use in MPAs:
- Swim with a buddy and actually keep tabs on each other
- Check your location frequently (the safety guide suggests every ~30 seconds)
- Stay close to an easy exit, especially early in the session
- Keep exertion low—no “let’s see what’s around that next point” against current
One classic safety message is “stay where you can touch bottom.” In MPAs, I tweak that idea because you often shouldn’t touch the bottom at all. My version is: stay in water shallow enough that you could stand if you had to—without needing to. Aim for sand channels and keep living coral comfortably below you.
Visitors, travel, and timing: an underrated part of MPA safety
MPAs draw visitors, and the research notes that drowning risk is higher among visitors. The Snorkel Safety Study also suggests it may be prudent to wait several days after arrival by air before snorkeling, and the Snorkeling Safety Guide gives a practical window: consider waiting 2-3 days after extended air travel. The study couldn’t confirm a correlation definitively, but it flags enough physiological plausibility to take the idea seriously—especially if you’re older, deconditioned, or managing health concerns.

- Short first session
- Easy conditions
- Stay shallow and close
- No long swims, no pushing pace
What to do if you become short of breath (don’t negotiate with it)
This is the moment where pride can get people hurt. The research is clear: shortness of breath can be a sign of danger. If it hits unexpectedly, the goal is to reduce effort immediately and exit the water.
If you unexpectedly become short of breath:
- Stay calm and stop finning hard
- Remove the snorkel or get your face out of the water
- Breathe slowly and deeply
- Get on your back to float and recover
- Signal for help and get out as soon as you can
The key is simple: don’t “finish the loop,” don’t “just make it to that last coral head.” End the session.
