For years, I thought free diving was the real test. Holding your breath, fighting the urge to breathe, sinking deeper into the blue-that takes guts, right? Meanwhile, snorkeling felt almost lazy. Float on the surface, breathe through a tube, watch the fish. Easy stuff.
Turns out, I had it backward.
The numbers from Hawai‘i caught my attention a while back. Between 2014 and 2023, more visitors drowned while snorkeling than while swimming, surfing, or free diving combined. Not by a small margin either. And when I started digging into why, I stumbled onto something called Snorkel-Induced Rapid Onset Pulmonary Edema-SI-ROPE for short. It’s not a term you hear at the beach, but it explains a lot about what can go wrong when you’re floating face-down, breathing through a tube.
Your Lungs Are Working Overtime
When you snorkel, you’re not just breathing normally. Water pressure on your chest, plus the resistance from the snorkel itself, means every inhale requires extra effort. That effort creates negative pressure in your chest-a vacuum effect. Over time, that vacuum can pull fluid from your capillaries into your lung tissue. Your lungs start filling with fluid. You feel short of breath, weak, confused. But it doesn’t feel like drowning the way movies show it. There’s no thrashing, no gasping. Just quiet hypoxia, then unconsciousness.
The Snorkel Safety Study tested 50 different snorkel designs and found huge variation in how much resistance they create. Some were fine. Others required significantly more negative pressure to inhale. And here’s the kicker: even experienced snorkelers couldn’t tell which ones were high-resistance just by looking at them. You might be using a snorkel that makes your lungs work twice as hard without ever knowing it.
Why Free Diving Is Different
Free divers train for breath-holding. They learn to manage pressure, stay relaxed, and recognize their limits. They also don’t have a snorkel forcing resistance on every single breath. When they surface, they can breathe freely. A snorkeler never gets that break until they lift their head out of the water. That constant, low-level strain adds up over a session.
It’s not that free diving is safer-it has its own risks. But the safety culture around free diving is more developed. Snorkeling is still treated like a casual activity you can do without thinking. The data says otherwise.
What About Air Travel?
Here’s something I didn’t know until recently. Long flights expose you to mildly hypoxic conditions-the cabin pressure isn’t at sea level. For some people, especially older folks or those with undiagnosed heart conditions, that hypoxic exposure can temporarily weaken the lung’s blood-gas barrier. The Snorkel Safety Study couldn’t confirm a clear statistical link between recent air travel and SI-ROPE, but the physiology makes sense. Several of the study’s authors suggest waiting a few days after flying before snorkeling.
I know, that’s hard advice when you’ve just landed in paradise. But I’ve made it a personal rule to spend the first day on the beach, not in the water. The reef will be there tomorrow.
What I Do Differently Now
I still love snorkeling. It’s one of the best ways to connect with the ocean. But I approach it more carefully than I used to.
- I test my gear beforehand. I inhale through the snorkel at rest, feeling for resistance. If it’s hard to breathe when I’m calm and dry, it’ll be worse when I’m active.
- I stay where I can touch bottom. That’s not about avoiding deep water-it’s about being able to stand up, remove my mask, and breathe normally if something feels off.
- I don’t push through shortness of breath. If I feel unexpectedly winded, I take the snorkel out, roll onto my back, and breathe. If I’m with a buddy, I signal. The best move is to exit immediately.
- I’m honest about my health. Cardiovascular issues, even ones you don’t notice day-to-day, can raise your risk. If you have any doubts, talk to a doctor before snorkeling.
- I wait after flying. Even 24 hours helps. Give your body time to recover from the flight before asking it to breathe through a tube.
Gear Matters, But It’s Not Everything

The Bottom Line
Snorkeling isn’t the carefree activity it’s marketed as. It has real physiological demands that interact with your health, your gear, and the environment in complex ways. Free diving gets the reputation for being dangerous, but the quiet, unassuming nature of snorkeling might make it riskier in practice.
I’ll keep doing both-floating on the surface and sinking into the deep. But now I do it with a lot more respect for what’s happening inside my body when I’m wearing that mask and tube.
The ocean doesn’t care about our assumptions. It responds to physics and physiology. The smarter we are about both, the longer we get to keep exploring.
