That doesn't sound like much until you realize that immersion alone adds about 30 centimeters of water pressure on your chest. Add a resistive snorkel on top of that, and suddenly your lungs are working a lot harder than they should.
That extra effort changes how you breathe. You inhale more forcefully. You exhale with more moisture and heat. And that sends a dense cloud of condensation straight onto your lens. Heavy fog during easy swimming? That's a clue that your breathing might be under strain-and your mask is showing it.
The Full-Face Mask Lesson
One of the more sobering findings from the study involved full-face masks. Out of the near-drowning survivors surveyed, 38% had been using a full-face mask. And of those, a staggering 90% said they felt the mask itself contributed to their trouble.
Full-face masks have a lot of internal volume. That means more surface area to fog up, and more dead space where carbon dioxide can build up. When CO₂ starts accumulating, your body's natural response is to breathe faster and deeper. That accelerates moisture output, which accelerates fog. It's a quiet feedback loop that can escalate before you even realize what's happening.

After five minutes of easy swimming: Check your mask. If you see heavy fog, stop for a moment and ask yourself two questions: Am I breathing harder than I should be? Do I feel any chest tightness or shortness of breath? These are more important than any anti-fog product you'll ever buy.
If fog keeps coming back fast: Consider switching to a simpler snorkel design. The research is clear: simpler snorkels tend to create less resistance. The study found that dry-top snorkels and full-face masks had the widest variability in performance-some were fine, some were problematic. If possible, try your gear in shallow water first, where you can easily stand up and make adjustments.
What Fog Can't Tell You

In fact, the study found that a quarter of snorkel-related deaths involved people who were experienced divers who knew their equipment well.
So take fog as a clue, not a diagnosis. The deeper safety messages are simple: stay where you can touch bottom, swim with a buddy, check your position often, and if you suddenly feel short of breath, don't try to tough it out. Remove your mask and snorkel, roll onto your back, breathe slowly and deeply, and get out of the water. That sequence alone could make all the difference.

I still put a drop of diluted baby shampoo on my lenses before every trip. It's cheap, it works, and it's become part of my pre-water ritual. But I've stopped thinking of it as just a fog solution. It's a moment to pause, to check my gear, to ask myself how I'm really feeling before I push off.
