Snorkeling is how most people fall in love with the ocean. It’s also how too many people die without anyone noticing until it’s too late.
Let me be clear: I’m not here to scare you away from snorkeling. I’m here because I love it—and because I’ve spent years reading the research, talking to lifeguards, and learning the hard way that the biggest risk in the water isn’t a shark or a rip current. It’s what we don’t know. And what we don’t know about snorkeling could fill a textbook that doesn’t exist yet.
The Quiet Killer You’ve Never Heard Of
There’s a condition called SI-ROPE: Snorkel-Induced Rapid Onset Pulmonary Edema. It sounds like medical jargon, but it’s actually frighteningly simple. When you breathe through a snorkel, you create negative pressure in your chest. Under normal circumstances, your body handles it fine. But when that pressure gets too high—because of a restrictive snorkel, heavy exertion, or an underlying health issue—fluid can be pulled from your bloodstream into your lungs.

The Hawai‘i Snorkel Safety Study, published in 2022, examined 32 snorkel-related deaths. Nearly half were judged “very likely” caused by hypoxia from SI-ROPE, not from swallowing water. And here’s the part that stopped me cold: the typical drowning sequence for SI-ROPE doesn’t involve thrashing or calling for help. Victims simply stop moving. They float face-down. Quietly.
That’s not the drowning we picture. But it’s the one that’s happening, especially among visitors who just got off a long flight.
The Full-Face Mask Question
I’ve seen full-face masks explode in popularity over the last few years. They look futuristic. They promise easy breathing and a panoramic view. But the data tells a different story.
In that same Hawai‘i study, 38% of snorkelers who got into trouble were using a full-face mask. And of those, 90% considered the mask a contributing factor. Think about that—nine out of ten people who had a serious incident while wearing one believed the mask itself played a role.
Why? Because full-face masks, by design, create more breathing resistance than a traditional snorkel. They can’t be removed quickly in an emergency. So what would a meaningful snorkeling certification look like? I’ve been mulling this over for a while. Here’s what I’d include:
- Gear awareness – Understanding that not all snorkels are created equal. The study found that even trained technicians could correctly guess a snorkel’s resistance level only 26% of the time by looking at it. You have to test it.
- Physiology 101 – Learning about SI-ROPE, immersion pulmonary edema, and why you should wait 2-3 days after a long-haul flight before snorkeling. Your body needs time to recover from the altitude and dry air of air travel.
- Emergency drills – Practicing the critical response: remove your mask, roll onto your back, signal for help, and exit the water immediately. No “toughing it out.” No “just resting for a minute.” Get out.
- Buddy system that works – Not just “swim with a buddy,” but knowing what to watch for. The silent signs of distress—fatigue, confusion, stopping movement—are easy to miss if you’re not paying attention.
A Story from the Water
Last summer, I was out on my paddleboard near a popular snorkel spot. I noticed a person floating unusually still—no arm movement, no bubbles. Just face-down, drifting. I paddled over and tapped their fin. Nothing. I grabbed their arm and turned them over. They were limp, unresponsive.
I got them on my board, started paddling for shore, and by the time we reached shallow water, they coughed and came back.
Later, they told me they’d flown in from Chicago the night before. They’d had a big breakfast, grabbed a rental mask, and decided to “go see the fish” before checking into their hotel. No buddy. No understanding of the risks. They thought they were just taking a relaxing swim.
That person didn’t need a certification to stop them from snorkeling. They needed awareness. They needed someone to say: Hey, let’s talk about what can go wrong, and what to do if it does.
What You Can Do Right Now
The Hawai‘i Snorkel Safety Study proposed a set of safety messages that are simple, actionable, and potentially life-saving. I’ll share them here, because they apply no matter where you snorkel:
- Stay where you can touch the bottom. Be confident in shallow water before moving deeper.
- If you can’t swim, don’t snorkel. It’s not the same as floating with a mask.
- If you have a heart or respiratory condition, consider not snorkeling. Or at least get medical advice first.
- Wait several days after flying before snorkeling. Your lungs need time to recover.
- Check your location frequently—every 30 seconds. Currents can drift you without you noticing.
- If you experience shortness of breath, remove your snorkel, breathe slowly and deeply, and get out immediately. Your gear isn’t worth your life.
