The One Snorkeling Skill I Had Completely Backwards

I remember the first time I cleared a flooded snorkel. I was maybe twelve, floating in a murky lake, and my dad shouted instructions from the shore. "Blow hard!" I did, and water shot up like a geyser. I felt like a pro. For years after that, I thought the ability to blast water out of a tube was the mark of a true water person. Turns out, I was focusing on the wrong thing entirely.

Here's the thing about spending a lot of time in the ocean—you pick up little habits, piece together advice from friends and gear manuals, and assume you've got it figured out. But a few months ago, I stumbled across some research out of Hawai'i that completely shifted my perspective. The Snorkel Safety Study, backed by the State of Hawai'i Department of Health, looked at what actually causes trouble for snorkelers. And the results surprised me—not because they revealed some brand-new danger, but because they showed that the danger I'd been worried about was rarely the real issue.

We've Been Looking at the Wrong Problem

Conventional wisdom says: water gets in your snorkel, you inhale it, you choke, you panic. So we practice clearing techniques until they're second nature. But the study's near-drowning survivors told a different story. Almost none of them had inhaled water as the first event. Instead, they described a quiet, creeping sensation—shortness of breath, then fatigue, then weakness, then a feeling that something was very, very wrong. By the time they wanted help, they could barely signal for it.

The mechanism behind this is called Snorkel Induced Rapid Onset Pulmonary Edema, or SI-ROPE. It sounds clinical, but the idea is simple: breathing through a snorkel creates negative pressure in your chest. Add the weight of water on your body plus the prone position, and that pressure can pull fluid from your own blood vessels into your lungs. You don't need to swallow a drop of seawater for your lungs to fill up. Your own body does it for you.

What the Numbers Actually Say

The researchers tested 50 different snorkel designs, measuring how much suction each one required to inhale. Their experienced technicians tried to guess which models had high resistance—and they guessed wrong 74% of the time. That hit me hard. If people who handle this gear every day can't tell a hard-breathing snorkel from an easy one by sight, how is the average snorkeler supposed to know?

Then I looked at the medical examiner data. Out of 32 snorkel-related deaths reviewed, 15 were almost certainly caused by hypoxia from SI-ROPE. Another 14 were likely from either SI-ROPE or aspiration. Only 3 couldn't be pinned down. And a quarter of the victims were experienced swimmers or divers—people who knew how to handle a flooded tube.

So What About Clearing Your Snorkel?

This is where I had to rethink everything. The sharp exhale we use to clear a snorkel is itself a form of exertion. If you're already fighting against resistance, if your lungs are starting to accumulate fluid, that blast of air might be the extra strain that tips you over. The researchers were clear: the right response to shortness of breath isn't to blow harder—it's to remove the snorkel entirely, breathe calmly, and get out of the water.

I know that feels counterintuitive. We're taught to conquer equipment problems, not surrender to them. But think about it this way: your snorkel is a tool for surface breathing. If it's making you work harder, it's failing its job. The safest move is to stop using it.

What I Do Differently Now

I still practice clearing my snorkel in shallow water. It's a useful skill. But I also do something I never used to: I pay attention to how my snorkel feels before it floods. I test the resistance when I'm standing chest-deep, just breathing normally. If I feel any tug or effort, I switch to a different model or skip the snorkel altogether and just float with my face in the water.

I've also stopped exercising while breathing through a snorkel. No more swimming laps with it on. The study found that high exertion was a common factor in incidents, and it makes sense—the harder you breathe, the more negative pressure you generate. Save the heavy breathing for when your face is out of the water.

And if I've flown somewhere to snorkel, I give myself a couple of days before heading out. Hypobaric conditions during flights can subtly affect your lung capillaries, and the research suggests that freshly arrived travelers may be at higher risk. That extra waiting period is a small price for peace of mind.

Building a Better Safety Habit

Here's a simple list I now run through before every snorkel session, and I think it's worth sharing:

  • Breathe through your snorkel while standing in shallow water. If it feels difficult, choose a different one or go without.
  • Know the early signs: shortness of breath, unusual fatigue, weakness, or a sense that something is off. These aren't anxiety—they're signals.
  • If you feel any of those, remove your mask and snorkel immediately. Float on your back, breathe deeply, and head for shore.
  • Don't exercise or exert while using a snorkel. Save hard breathing for mask-free swimming.
  • Check with a doctor if you have any concerns about your heart or lungs before snorkeling, especially if you're over 50.
  • Stay where you can touch bottom until you're completely comfortable with your gear and conditions.

I know this sounds like a lot. But it's really just one shift in perspective: your snorkel is there to make breathing easier, not to test your lung power. If it's not doing that, get rid of it.

Still My Favorite Way to See the World

I'm not trying to scare anyone away from snorkeling. It's still one of my favorite things to do—gliding over a reef, watching turtles glide by, feeling the pulse of the ocean. But I've learned that respecting the water means understanding the less obvious risks, not just the splashy ones.

Next time you're out there and feel water trickle into your snorkel, pause before you blast it clear. Check in with your body. Are you breathing easily? Do you feel strong? If the answer is yes, clear it and keep enjoying the view. If it's no, take the mask off, take a few deep breaths of open air, and try again later.

That little moment of awareness might be the most important skill you ever learn.
