The One Pressure You Never Think About While Snorkeling (And Why It Matters)

I’ve been floating face-down in saltwater for as long as I can remember. Snorkeling, surfing, paddleboarding-if there’s a way to be on or in the water, I’ve probably tried it. It sounds clinical, but it’s actually a very real, very quiet risk that affects snorkelers far more often than most of us realize. And once I understood it, I realized I’d been overlooking the most important pressure equalization of all-the one happening deep in my lungs.

What Most Snorkelers Don’t Know About Drowning

Here’s the thing. We tend to think drowning always looks dramatic-someone thrashing, coughing, gasping for air. But the Snorkel Safety Study, a major research effort out of Hawai‘i, found that many snorkel-related drownings don’t look like that at all. Instead, the sequence is eerily quiet: sudden shortness of breath, fatigue, loss of strength, a feeling of doom, then diminishing consciousness.

The cause isn’t water in the lungs. It’s the snorkeler’s own body fluid being pulled into the air sacs by the vacuum created with each inhalation. That’s SI-ROPE. And the study found it was a likely factor in the majority of snorkel-related deaths they reviewed-even among experienced swimmers.

What Creates That Dangerous Vacuum?

It comes down to three things: snorkel resistance, exertion, and personal health. When you’re floating face-down, your chest is already under water pressure. Add a snorkel that requires extra effort to inhale through, and the negative pressure inside your lungs increases. Over time, that pressure can pull fluid from your blood vessels into your air spaces. Your lungs start to fill-not with seawater, but with your own plasma.

The scary part? You can’t tell how much resistance a snorkel creates just by looking at it. In the study, even experienced technicians guessed wrong more than 70% of the time when trying to identify high-resistance snorkels by sight alone.

How I Changed My Approach (And My Gear)

The Simple Signal That Could Save Your Life

The study’s most practical finding? Shortness of breath is not normal while snorkeling. If you feel like you can’t catch your breath, or you’re getting fatigued faster than usual, don’t push through. Remove your mask immediately. Roll onto your back. Breathe slowly and deeply. Signal for help if you need it. Get out of the water.

That one action-taking off the mask and breathing freely-can break the vacuum cycle before it becomes dangerous.

What About Ear Pressure?

Yes, ear equalization still matters. If you’re descending even a few feet, pinch your nose and blow gently. But I’ve learned that the pressure we should be most mindful of is the one we create with every inhale. It’s invisible. It’s silent. And it’s something we can manage with the right knowledge and the right equipment.

I love snorkeling more than almost anything. I want every person who gets in the water to come back safely, excited, and eager to go again. That starts with understanding that your breath is your most important tool-and the one piece of gear you can never afford to ignore.
