The Breath Beneath the Waves: What I Learned About Snorkeling From a Study I Couldn’t Put Down

I remember the first time I saw a spotted eagle ray glide past me, its wings rippling like a silk scarf underwater. I was so captivated I almost forgot to breathe. But a few minutes later, I did forget-or rather, my breath started feeling wrong. Shallow. Strained. That familiar tightness in my chest that I used to chalk up to being out of shape.

The Hidden Physics of Floating

When you put your face in the water, your chest is submerged about 12 inches. That adds roughly 30 cm of water pressure to your torso-pressure your lungs have to overcome with every breath. Now add a snorkel. Even the best-designed one creates some resistance. The narrower the tube or the more complicated the valve, the harder your diaphragm has to pull.

The Hawai‘i Journal of Health & Social Welfare published a study where they tested 50 different snorkel devices. The results were eye-opening: resistance varied wildly, and you couldn’t tell by looking at a snorkel whether it was high or low resistance. Some devices required more than four times the negative pressure of others. And when you’re swimming against a current, or breathing faster because you’re excited about a sea turtle, that resistance multiplies.

That’s how SI-ROPE happens. It’s not about water getting into your lungs-it’s about your own body pulling fluid into them. The study found that in near-drowning incidents, aspiration of water was rarely the trigger. Instead, it was this silent buildup of fluid, followed by sudden shortness of breath, loss of strength, and then panic.

What This Means for You and Me

I don’t share this to scare anyone. I share it because understanding it changed the way I snorkel. Now I:

  • Test my gear in shallow water before heading out. I take a few slow, deep breaths through the mask to feel the airflow.
  • Pay attention to my body. If my breathing starts feeling labored, I lift my head, remove the mask, and breathe normally for a minute. That simple act can reset everything.
  • Stay where I can touch bottom until I’m completely comfortable. The study showed almost all incidents happen where the person couldn’t touch.
  • Watch my buddy-but also watch myself. That last one is hardest, because when you’re mesmerized by marine life, it’s easy to ignore the signals.

Connecting With Marine Life-Without Fighting Your Gear

The whole point of snorkeling is to connect with the underwater world. To see a moray eel peer out from a crevice, or a school of barracuda turn as one, or a manta ray glide beneath you like a living shadow. But that connection depends on being present. And being present depends on breathing easily.

Recent Air Travel

Long flights expose you to reduced cabin pressure and lower oxygen levels for hours. That can subtly compromise the integrity of your lung tissue. The study couldn’t prove a definitive link, but the physiological evidence is strong enough that Hawai‘i’s Department of Health recommends waiting two to three days after flying before snorkeling. I started doing that, and I honestly feel more energetic and less tight-chested when I finally hit the water.

Heart Health

The data showed that 44% of snorkel-related deaths had cardiac disease likely to increase left ventricular pressure. Many people don’t know they have diastolic dysfunction or other subtle heart conditions. If you’re over 50, or if you have any reason to doubt your cardiovascular health, it’s worth getting checked before you go out. That’s not being over-cautious-it’s being responsible.

The study also noted that inexperience was rarely a factor. Most people who got into trouble were experienced swimmers and snorkelers. The danger isn’t about skill. It’s about physiology, equipment, and environment working together in ways we don’t always see.

These days, my snorkeling routine starts on the beach. I check my mask, take a few deep breaths, and remind myself: the most important thing I can do for the marine life I’m about to see is to be fully present. That means not pushing through discomfort, not ignoring that little voice that says something feels off.

I remember floating over a coral head in the Florida Keys last spring. A nurse shark was resting underneath, its tail barely moving. I could have stayed there for an hour. But after 20 minutes, I noticed my breaths getting shallower. So I surfaced, floated on my back for a minute, and then went back down. The shark was still there.
