I remember my first morning in Bali like yesterday. Barely slept after the red-eye from Los Angeles, but the promise of turquoise water had me up before sunrise. By 8 a.m., I was floating face-down off Nusa Penida, breathing through a rental snorkel, watching manta rays glide beneath me. Magical. But also, I later learned, a little reckless.
Not because of the current or the reefs-those were fine. But because my body had just spent 18 hours in a pressurized metal tube at 35,000 feet, and now I was asking my lungs to work harder than they had in days, all while breathing through a narrow tube and floating in a position that shifts blood flow into my chest. I had no idea a silent danger called SI-ROPE existed. And I’ll bet most travelers landing in Bali don’t either.
The Dry Season Secret Everyone Knows
Let’s start with the obvious. Bali’s best snorkeling weather runs from April through October. That’s the dry season. The trade winds blow from the east, meaning the seas are calmer, rain is rare, and visibility in spots like Amed, Tulamben, and the Gilis can stretch 20 to 30 meters. Want to see the USAT Liberty wreck draped in soft coral? Go in June. Want to swim with manta rays at Manta Point? July and August offer the most reliable sightings.
Between November and March, the monsoon brings rain, runoff, and choppier conditions. Visibility drops. Currents pick up. Some of the more exposed sites become uncomfortable or even dangerous.
But here’s the truth most guides don’t emphasize: the calendar is only half the equation. The other half is what’s happening inside your lungs-and that depends on when you got off the plane.
The Hidden Variable: Recent Air Travel
I’ve read the full Hawai‘i Snorkel Safety Study-the one that analyzed over 30 snorkel-related deaths and interviewed survivors. One finding stood out: researchers strongly suspect that prolonged air travel may increase the risk of snorkel-induced rapid onset pulmonary edema (SI-ROPE). They couldn’t prove it statistically with the data they had, but the physiology supports it.
Here’s how it works. When you fly, cabin pressure is lower than sea level. That mild hypoxia-lower oxygen in your blood-can trigger subtle changes in your pulmonary blood vessels. The delicate membranes where oxygen enters your bloodstream may become slightly stressed or leaky. You don’t feel it. You just land, feeling tired and a little dehydrated.
Then you go snorkeling. Immersion alone adds pressure. The prone position (floating on your stomach) shifts 500-700 ml of blood into your chest. And every time you inhale through a snorkel, you create negative pressure in your lungs. If the snorkel has high resistance-narrow bore, complicated valves, a dry-top mechanism that doesn’t open easily-that negative pressure multiplies. The cumulative effect, breath after breath, can pull fluid from your capillaries into your air sacs.
That’s SI-ROPE. And it can happen without you swallowing a single drop of water.
The Hawai‘i study recommends waiting 2-3 days after extended air travel before snorkeling. I’ve started following that rule myself. Now, when I land in Bali, I spend the first two days exploring rice terraces, eating satay, and sleeping in. The ocean will still be there.
What Your Snorkel Is Doing (Without You Knowing)
I get asked a lot: What mask should I bring to Bali? And my answer always starts with the same question: How does it breathe?
The research I’ve studied tested 50 different snorkel devices at flow rates simulating moderate exertion. The results showed huge variability in resistance-from very low to quite high. More importantly, even experienced testers could only correctly identify high-resistance snorkels about 26% of the time by looking at them.
You cannot judge how a snorkel breathes by its appearance.

The Other Factors That Matter in Bali
The Hawai‘i study also identified several risk factors that apply just as much to Bali:
- Heart health. 44% of snorkel-related deaths had underlying cardiac conditions that increased pressure in the heart’s left side. Many people don’t know they have these issues.
- Age. Risk increases significantly over 50.
- Exertion. Don’t swim hard while breathing through a snorkel. If you need to exercise, take off the mask.
- Currents. Many of Bali’s best sites have strong currents. Amed is generally calm, but Nusa Penida’s Manta Point can have ripping currents that catch visitors off guard.
One of the most striking stats from the study: 90% of those who wore a full-face mask considered it a contributing factor to their near-drowning incident. Full-face masks have design challenges-you can’t clear them with a sharp exhale, you can’t remove them easily in an emergency, and valve malfunctions can lead to serious consequences. That’s not to say all full-face masks are dangerous, but it’s a factor worth serious consideration.
So When Is the Best Time to Snorkel in Bali?
Here’s my honest answer, shaped by both experience and science:
The best time is three days after you arrive, during the dry season, at a site you’ve scouted first, with gear you’ve tested, and a buddy who knows what to watch for.
That might sound like a lot. But let me tell you-when you float over the coral gardens of Menjangan Island, with no clouds, no current, and the sunlight piercing through the blue, you’ll feel the difference between rushing and being ready.
A Few Practical Tips from Someone Who’s Made Mistakes
- Give yourself two full days before snorkeling after a long flight. Hydrate, sleep, eat well. Your lungs need time to recover from cabin pressure.
- Test your equipment in shallow water first. Even if you’ve used it before, try it at the beach where you can stand up.
- Stay where you can touch bottom on your first session. Move deeper only when you’re completely confident.
- Check your position every 30 seconds. Currents in Bali can drift you quickly without any sensation of moving.
- If you get short of breath, remove the mask immediately. Float on your back, signal for help, and get out. Don’t try to “push through it.”
- Swim with a buddy-and not just someone who’s nearby. Someone who’s actively watching for signs of trouble.
What I Wish I’d Known
That first morning off Nusa Penida, I was lucky. I didn’t get into trouble. But I was also unaware, dehydrated, and breathing through equipment I hadn’t tested. I know better now.
Bali is one of the most beautiful places on Earth to snorkel. The diversity of marine life, the warmth of the water, the culture that welcomes you-it’s unforgettable. But the ocean doesn’t care about your vacation plans. It follows physics. Your body follows physiology.
The best time to snorkel in Bali is when you’re truly ready-not just when the calendar says so.
