I surfaced and the beach had shifted. The towel I left by the lifeguard tower was now a small patch of color a hundred yards downcurrent. I had been watching a green sea turtle for what felt like thirty seconds. The current had been pushing me sideways the whole time.

Western navigation added the compass, the chronometer, and the chart. In the 1980s, satellite positioning opened to civilian use, and by the mid-1990s it was fully operational. What Your Phone Actually Does Well

- Offline satellite maps. Cell signal disappears along rocky coastlines. Download the map for your beach before you leave the hotel.
- Tide and current predictions. Low tide turns a deep cut into a knee-banging shortcut. A tidal current can double your swim effort.
- Marine charts and protected area boundaries. Depth lines, reef limits, and no-anchor zones help you plan a route that will not damage coral.
- GPS tracking. If you carry a small tracker in a swim buoy, you can download your path after the swim and see exactly where you drifted.
- Weather and wind overlays. Afternoon wind near the coast can stack up chop fast. Check it before you commit.

The Thirty-Second Problem
Hawai'i's Department of Health recorded more than 200 visitor ocean drownings connected to snorkeling from 2014 to 2023. The Snorkel Safety Study, published in June 2021, found a pattern worth repeating. Most incidents happened where the person could not touch bottom, and drifting away from base was a common thread. The study's proposed safety messages are direct. Swim with a buddy. Stay where you can touch the bottom comfortably. Check your location frequently, every thirty seconds.
No phone app does that for you. You swim face down, breathing through a snorkel, and you cannot glance at a screen every half minute without breaking your rhythm. My Pre-Swim Routine

- Drop a pin on your entry and send it to someone onshore, along with your expected return time.
- Look at the ocean before you get in. Watch the boats, the surf, and the direction of the current.
- In the water, stay where you can touch bottom for the first ten minutes. Pick a landmark onshore and check it every thirty seconds.
- If you feel discomfort, dizziness, or breathing difficulty, exit the water immediately.
No app replaces step 4. That is the oldest navigation tool there is.
After You Get Out: Build a Drift Log
This is the part most snorkelers skip. After you get out, write down or record where you entered, where you exited, and how far you drifted.
