Hawai‘i’s Snorkel Safety Study highlights a phenomenon called Snorkel-Induced Rapid Onset Pulmonary Edema (SI-ROPE), identified as a common factor in snorkel-related drowning and near-drowning events. In plain terms, certain conditions may contribute to fluid accumulating in the lungs (pulmonary edema), reducing oxygen exchange and leading to weakness and hypoxia.
The study points to several risk factors associated with SI-ROPE, including:
- The degree of the snorkel’s resistance to inhalation
- Certain pre-existing medical conditions
- Increased exertion
Here’s the part that challenges common assumptions. Among survey participants, the study found that aspiration (inhaling water) was rarely the trigger in near-drowning incidents, and lack of snorkeling or swimming experience was rarely a factor. That’s a big shift from the usual story people tell themselves after the fact.
It also noted that almost all events took place where the person could not touch bottom. If you’ve ever felt your breathing get weird at the surface, you already understand why that detail matters. Being able to stand up is a powerful reset button.
Free diving: normal breathing, then breath-hold

Conditions can stress both activities, but they do it differently.
- Chop and wind can turn surface breathing into constant work while snorkeling.
- Current can trick snorkelers into sustained exertion—one of the risk factors highlighted in the SI-ROPE discussion.
- Cold water can increase breathing rate and stress for anyone, fast.
This is where that “can you touch bottom?” detail really matters. When you can stand, you can reset your breathing immediately. When you can’t, you’re forced to solve the problem while floating—and that’s a tougher task than most people expect.
If you get unexpectedly short of breath while snorkeling
This is the moment where knowing what to do matters more than knowing what something is called. If you become unexpectedly short of breath:
- Stop and try to stay calm.
- Remove your snorkel/mask as needed to breathe freely.
- Roll onto your back to rest and keep your airway clear.
- Signal for help.
- Get out of the water immediately.

On a good day, I do both—but I treat them like separate modes, not a mash-up. If I’m snorkeling, I keep it relaxed and exit-ready. If I’m free diving, I keep it structured and conservative.

Both sports can be beautiful. Both deserve respect. But if you’re looking for the cleanest, most useful takeaway, it’s this: the breath is the difference.
Keep exertion low, practice with your equipment in a safe environment, stay aware of conditions, and never ignore shortness of breath. That mindset makes snorkeling and free diving not just more enjoyable—but meaningfully safer for the long run.
