But anyone who’s actually put in time on the surface-especially when there’s a little current, a little chop, or a longer swim than expected-knows stamina is the difference between a great session and an “I need to be done right now” moment.

- Zone 2 steady work (2 sessions/week): 30-45 minutes at an easy pace where you can speak in full sentences.

- Optional short bursts (1 session/week): Helps for those brief “get yourself into calmer water” moments.
Good cross-training choices that translate well: easy swimming, paddling, cycling, incline walking, and light jogging (if your joints are happy).
3) Breathing control: the part that keeps effort from snowballing
Because the study highlights inhalation resistance and increased exertion as risk factors, I treat breathing control as a core skill-not a “nice to have.” This isn’t about pushing limits underwater. It’s about staying calm, staying smooth, and knowing how to reset.
- Extended exhale drill: inhale 3-4 seconds, exhale 6-8 seconds. This is my favorite “downshift” pattern.
- Box breathing: inhale 4, hold 4, exhale 4, hold 4. Great before entering the water if you’re feeling keyed up.

Strength Training That Supports Snorkeling (Without Making You Feel Stiff)
Snorkeling looks leg-dominant, but posture and stability are what keep your kick efficient for the long haul. Two short strength sessions a week go a long way.
- Step-ups or split squats (3×8 per side)
- Hip hinge pattern (3×8)
- Rows or band pulls (3×10-12)
- Side plank (3×30-45 seconds per side)
- Calf raises (2×15)
Gear Familiarity Matters: Train With What You’ll Use
One practical message that comes out of the Hawai‘i guidance is to choose snorkel devices thoughtfully, because the degree of resistance to inhalation can matter-and it isn’t always obvious by looking. Another message I fully agree with: try your equipment in a safe environment first.
