A 2022 study in the Hawai'i Journal of Health & Social Welfare measured 50 snorkels at three liters per second. The researchers found that technicians correctly predicted which snorkels had high breathing resistance only 26 percent of the time. That gap matters because high resistance increases negative pressure in the lungs. A separate Hawaiian snorkel safety study identified a mechanism called snorkel-induced rapid onset pulmonary edema or SI-ROPE. Fluid can move into the lung's air sacs when inhalation pressure spikes. The first signs are often sudden shortness of breath, fatigue, and loss of strength.

Boats, Shorelines, and Local Rules

Lakes have boat traffic. Drivers do not expect swimmers away from marked areas. Stay close to shore and keep a buddy nearby. Bright swim caps or inflatable buoys help you stand out.
