I plan trips around water. Restaurants rarely make the itinerary. Over years of snorkeling, surfing, scuba diving, kayaking, and paddleboarding, I have learned that the most important item on any snorkeling packing list is not a piece of gear. It is time. The missing item is a buffer between landing at the airport and your first long session with a mask on. Why the Usual Advice Falls Short
The study also upends three common assumptions. Inhaling water was rarely the trigger in near-drowning incidents. Lack of swimming or snorkeling experience was rarely a factor. Almost all events took place where the person could not touch bottom. Many of the people in trouble knew how to swim. They were simply too far from a place to stand, or they were breathing through a snorkel that fought back.
The condition behind many of these events is Snorkel Induced Rapid Onset Pulmonary Edema, or SI-ROPE. The typical sequence is sudden shortness of breath, fatigue, and loss of strength, followed by a feeling of panic and the need for help, then diminishing consciousness. It can happen quietly. An observer may see a snorkeler floating face down and assume everything is fine. A 2022 paper in the Hawai‘i Journal of Health & Social Welfare reviewed 32 snorkel-related deaths. Of those, 15 were very likely caused by hypoxia from this type of pulmonary edema, and 14 more were likely caused by either that or aspiration. Eight of the 32 victims were experienced freedivers or spearfishers. These were not people who lacked water confidence.

Snorkel Resistance Is the Hidden Variable
Snorkel resistance is the factor hiding inside every rental bin. The same 2022 paper tested 50 snorkel devices at flow rates of one, two, and three liters per second. Resistance varied widely across dry snorkels, non-dry snorkels, and full face masks. More important, the technicians could not reliably guess which devices would test high. When high resistance was defined as pressure greater than negative five centimeters of water, only 26 percent of high-resistance snorkels were guessed correctly before testing. You face the same problem at a rental counter. Looking at a snorkel tells you almost nothing about how hard your lungs will work.
Resistance matters more when effort rises. If you are fighting a current, swimming a long distance, or working harder than usual, your need for air climbs. A narrow or valved snorkel can force your diaphragm to pull harder with every breath. That extra negative pressure can draw fluid into the air spaces of the lungs, reducing oxygen exchange. That is the pathway behind rapid onset pulmonary edema.

The science is not settled, but the reasoning is grounded in lung physiology. Long-haul flights expose you to cabin pressures equivalent to six to eight thousand feet of altitude for hours. That mild, sustained lower-oxygen state may make the delicate membranes in your lungs more vulnerable to the pressure swings of snorkeling.
The Snorkel Safety Study was unable to confirm a direct statistical link between recent prolonged air travel and SI-ROPE, but the authors wrote that data and physiological functions strongly support that possibility. I treat that uncertainty as a planning rule, not a maybe. I build a 48-hour buffer into any trip that crosses more than five time zones or keeps me in a pressurized cabin longer than five hours. That buffer is not wasted vacation time. It becomes shallow-water practice, fit testing, and jet lag recovery.
Test Gear in Water You Can Stand In
Choosing a mask before you board matters more than choosing a hotel with an ocean view. Rental masks have unknown histories. A valve may be cracked, a seal may be worn, and the bore size may be narrower than you expect. The 2022 study found that visual inspection is a poor predictor of resistance. You cannot tell what you are renting just by looking.
Full face snorkel masks have received extra scrutiny for a reason. Some are difficult to remove in an urgent situation, and some cannot be cleared with a sharp exhale the way a traditional mouthpiece snorkel can. - Day four and beyond. Now you can think about boat tours, longer swims, and stronger currents. You have given your body time to recalibrate, and you know your gear.
