I keep seeing the same scene on reef tours. Someone in their late 60s wades in, lowers their face, and spends the next 40 minutes breathing easy through a full face mask. No jaw clench. No mouthpiece. Just a clear window and slow, easy breaths. Twenty years ago, that same person probably gave up on snorkeling. The gear has changed.
Traditional snorkels asked older bodies to work harder than they needed to. The sport used to filter out anyone past middle age. New mask designs removed some of that work. But the safety picture is more complicated than comfort. Understanding what actually changed, and what still demands respect, matters for every older swimmer heading to the reef.
What Traditional Snorkels Asked of Older Bodies
A standard J-tube snorkel has one job: keep a breathing tube above the surface while your face is down. Everything else falls on you. You grip the mouthpiece with your teeth for the entire session. You breathe only through your mouth, fighting the tube's internal resistance. When a wave splashes in, you clear it with a sharp, forceful exhale.
Those demands scale differently with age. Jaw muscles tire. Some people develop a stronger gag reflex over the years. Mouth breathing against resistance costs more energy as lung capacity declines. Clearing a flooded tube with a hard blast requires expiratory strength that often fades after 60. None of that means an older person cannot snorkel. It means the traditional design made the sport more taxing than it needed to be.
What the Hawaii Data Actually Shows
A 2022 study in the Hawaii Journal of Health and Social Welfare reviewed 98 drowning reports from the state medical examiner. Thirty-two involved snorkeling. Of those 32 victims, 21 were older than 50, and 22 were visitors. Eight were experienced free divers or spear fishermen who knew the water well. Inexperience did not explain those deaths.
The same study measured how much breathing resistance different snorkels added. The results varied widely. Some snorkels tested low resistance. Others tested high. Two technicians tried to guess which snorkels would test as high resistance just by looking at them. For the high-resistance devices, they guessed correctly 26 percent of the time. A snorkeler in a shop cannot reliably tell which tube will make breathing harder.
That gap matters more for older swimmers. A younger snorkeler with strong aerobic capacity can compensate for a high-resistance tube. An older snorkeler may not have the reserve. When breathing effort rises, the body works harder to pull the same volume of air. In the water, that extra work can turn dangerous.
Full Face Masks Shifted the Load
Full face mask designers removed the mouthpiece entirely. You breathe through your nose and mouth inside a sealed mask, with the snorkel above the mask rather than between your teeth. For many older swimmers who left the sport decades ago, that single change is the difference between a miserable 10 minutes and a comfortable hour.
But not all full face masks are built the same. Early designs drew scrutiny in snorkel safety research. Some trapped exhaled air. The Hawaii study identified Rapid Onset Pulmonary Edema, or ROPE, as a common factor in snorkel-related drownings. That fluid reduces oxygen exchange and causes sudden shortness of breath, weakness, and confusion. The victim may not splash or struggle. They may simply stop moving and slip under.
Older swimmers face higher risk. The study found that 44 percent of the snorkel-related deaths involved cardiac disease likely to increase pressure in the left ventricle. Stiffer hearts and higher baseline lung pressure make fluid shifts more likely. If you have a heart or lung condition, talk to your doctor before snorkeling. No mask removes that conversation.
Gear design still matters. A snorkel with lower breathing resistance reduces the negative pressure your body has to generate. In third-party testing by Dive Lab, the V3 measured a Work of Breathing of 0.72 joules per liter. Time-average carbon dioxide exposure measured around 2.5 percent, below the 3 percent ceiling for 15-minute exposures in that same guidance. Safety Habits That Matter More After 60

- Snorkel with a buddy. Keep your partner in sight and check on each other every 30 seconds.
- Choose a lifeguarded beach when you can. If you cannot swim, do not snorkel.
- Stay where you can touch the bottom until you feel confident. Move to deeper water only when you know you can float and signal for help.
- If you feel short of breath, remove the mask, roll onto your back, signal, and get out of the water. Do not push through discomfort.
- After a long flight, give yourself a pause before snorkeling. The researchers note that prolonged air travel may affect the lungs in ways that increase ROPE risk. Waiting two to three days after a long flight is a reasonable precaution.
- If you have any cardiovascular concerns, get medical clearance first.
