I have spent enough afternoons drifting farther from the reef than I planned to know that the difference between a good current day and a bad one gets decided before your face goes in the water.
Part of my job at Seaview 180 involves thinking about the gear side of that equation. The water sense side came through years of trial and error.
The skill that decides it is reading water. Pacific navigators refined that skill for centuries because their lives depended on what the surface told them. Most modern snorkelers learn a single trick for current trouble: swim parallel to shore. That works as a last resort. It fails as a plan.
The better plan starts on land, with your mask in your hand and your eyes on the water.
Read the Water Before You Get Wet
In 1976, the voyaging canoe Hōkūleʻa sailed from Hawai'i to Tahiti without instruments. The navigator, Mau Piailug, held course by reading swells, wind, stars, and the texture of the water. He could feel a current by the way the canoe rode against it. That sensitivity took a lifetime, but the underlying skill is open to any snorkeler willing to stop seeing water as a flat blue surface.
A current leaves visible clues. A slick, glassy streak across choppier water marks a boundary between two flows. A line of foam, leaves, or drifting weed collects where currents converge. Darker water usually means deeper water, and a sharp color shift near the surface can mark an upwelling. Wind pushes the top few centimeters one way while a current moves the water beneath another, and the mismatch shows as a crosshatch of ripples.
You do not need a marine science degree to read these signs. You need ten minutes of focused looking before you enter. Pick a fixed point on shore. Watch how leaves and foam drift past it. Note the speed and direction. Do this before you gear up, and you will have a mental map of the flow before your first kick.
Plan Your Drift Instead of Fighting It
Escape-first advice concedes the mistake before you have made it. Positioning-first thinking asks where the current will take you, where you want to end up, and how to make the two match.
The practical version works like this. Pick a reef or bay you want to explore. Enter up-current of your target. Let the current carry you across it. Exit down-current at a chosen spot, usually where the flow weakens or the beach angles out. You drift with the current instead of fighting it, which saves energy and keeps your buddy within reach.
A navigator plans a crossing the same way. The canoe does not fight the flow. It uses the flow to make distance.
Why Currents Make Breathing Harder
Technique guides skip one physiological detail. Swimming against a current raises your breathing rate. That increased ventilation moves more air through your snorkel, which raises the work of breathing. If the snorkel has narrow passages, that work climbs fast.
A 2022 study in the Hawai'i Journal of Health & Social Welfare tested 50 snorkels at flow rates of 1, 2, and 3 liters per second. Resistance varied widely. When researchers tried to guess which devices tested high by inspection alone, they guessed correctly only 26 percent of the time. A snorkeler shopping by look and feel cannot reliably tell a high-resistance device from a low-resistance one. Design and testing matter more than appearance.

Three Drills You Can Run in Calm Water
Reading water needs practice. Positioning does too. Both are skills.
- The drift test. In shallow, calm water, pick a fixed point on the bottom, like a sandy patch or a mooring block. Float motionless for one minute and watch how far you move. Repeat in different spots on different tides. You learn the local flow without needing a chart.
- The entry-exit plan. Before you enter anywhere with current, stand on shore and trace the route. Where do you step in? What line will the current carry you along? Where will you climb out? Say the three answers out loud to your buddy. If you cannot name all three, choose a different spot. Moving water does not reward improvisation.
- The breathing check. Float face down and breathe normally. Then kick hard for one minute. If breathing turns labored, stop and rest. Shortness of breath during water exertion deserves immediate attention, not pushed-through discomfort.
The Safety Habits That Matter Most
A strong current compounds every other risk. The state snorkel safety guide puts it plainly: "Recreational snorkeling is not a benign, low-risk activity." From 2014 to 2023, snorkeling was one of the leading activities in Hawai'i ocean drownings, according to the State of Hawai'i Department of Health.
The Snorkel Safety Study final report, released in June 2021, identified snorkel-induced rapid onset pulmonary edema, or ROPE, as a common factor in snorkel-related drowning and near drowning. The risk factors it lists are the degree of the snorkel's resistance to inhalation, certain pre-existing medical conditions, and increased exertion. The same survey found that aspiration, the inhalation of water, was rarely the trigger or even a factor in near-drowning incidents while snorkeling. It also found that almost all events happened where the person could not touch bottom, and that lack of swimming or snorkeling experience was rarely the factor. Currents do not only catch beginners.
Keep these habits on any current day:
- If you cannot swim, do not snorkel.
- Never snorkel alone. The buddy rule applies every time, including calm water.
- Choose a lifeguarded beach when one is available.
- Stay where you can touch the bottom until you are confident.
- Check your location often, every 30 seconds when in moving water.
- Do not increase exertion while breathing through a snorkel.
- If you become short of breath, remove the mask, roll onto your back, signal for help, and get out.
- Consider waiting a few days after extended air travel before snorkeling hard. The study was unable to confirm a correlation between recent prolonged air travel and ROPE, but the data and physiological functions support that possibility.
- If you have a cardiovascular or respiratory condition, talk with your doctor before your trip.

Pacific navigators did not fight currents. They used them. A current is a moving sidewalk that happens to be wet. The skill is figuring out where it goes before you step on.
This lesson took me years to learn. I used to answer a strong current with more kicking, and the ocean always won. The shift came when I started treating current as a route rather than an obstacle. That change in mindset did more for my snorkeling than any piece of gear.
