Marine Biology Guides Change What You Actually See

The first time I followed a marine biologist over a reef, I missed a cleaner wrasse that was hiding in plain sight. The fish hovered a few inches off a coral head, doing its tail-flick dance, and I floated right by. Then the guide pointed it out, and the reef rearranged itself.

A 2022 paper in the Hawai'i Journal of Health & Social Welfare identified exertion and snorkel breathing resistance as factors in Rapid Onset Pulmonary Edema, also called ROPE. The sequence researchers described starts with sudden shortness of breath and fatigue, then moves to a feeling of doom and fading consciousness. It can happen fast.

The same study reviewed 32 snorkel-related deaths in Hawai'i. Eight of those people were experienced freedivers or spearfishers. Even strong swimmers are not immune to exertion and breathing resistance.

Feeding changes fish behavior and can make animals aggressive or dependent.

A morning tour beats an afternoon one. Fish are more active early, winds build through the day, and the light is better at 8 a.m. than at 2 p.m. If you just arrived after a long flight, give yourself two or three days before a strenuous tour. The Hawai'i study team flagged prolonged air travel as a possible risk factor for ROPE.

Safety Habits No Guide Can Replace

A guide helps, but personal safety stays with the snorkeler. The Hawai'i study found that most incidents happened in water too deep to stand. Keep these habits in place even on a guided tour.

  • Swim with a buddy and keep an eye on each other.
  • If you can't swim, don't snorkel.
  • Choose a mask designed for low breathing resistance.
  • Stay where you can touch bottom until you feel confident.
  • Check your location every 30 seconds.
  • Do not increase exertion while breathing through a snorkel.
  • If you become short of breath, remove the mask, get on your back, signal for help, and get out.
  • Keep children under adult supervision at all times.
