I'm 6'5" and Snorkeling Gear Has Been Gaslighting Me for Years

I still remember the moment I realized the problem wasn't me. I was on a boat off the Big Island, wedged into a rental vest that rode up so high I could've used it as a neck pillow. The mask I'd been handed leaked with every third breath. I spent more time clearing the lens and adjusting straps than actually looking at the reef. When I complained to the deckhand, he shrugged and said, "Yeah, snorkeling's just like that sometimes."

I believed him. For years I figured tall people just had to suffer through ill-fitting gear. Long torso? Vest's gonna bunch. Big face? Mask is gonna leak. Large lungs? Breathing through a narrow tube is supposed to feel like sipping air through a coffee stirrer. I accepted it as the price of admission. I was wrong.

What I didn't know then was that the entire snorkeling industry had been built on a set of body measurements from the 1950s. After World War II, outdoor gear manufacturers borrowed anthropometric data from military surveys that pegged the "average" American man at 5-foot-9 and 160 pounds. Mask skirts, snorkel bores, fin pockets-all of it cascaded from that single, imaginary person. The bell curve's hump got a comfortable fit. Everyone else got the same gear and a lot of discomfort. Every generation since has grown taller and more varied, but the sizing habits barely budged.

I've seen tall swimmers exhaust themselves fighting a vest that wants to perch at their armpits.

Snorkel Induced Rapid Onset Pulmonary Edema (SI-ROPE) is a documented phenomenon. The Hawaiian snorkeling safety study identified the snorkel's resistance to inhalation as a primary risk factor. Fluid can leak into the lungs even without water aspiration, silently reducing your oxygen uptake. The snorkeler suddenly feels short of breath, then weak, then confused-no thrashing, no obvious panic. It can happen to experienced swimmers in calm conditions. And a high-resistance snorkel makes it more likely.

  • After a long flight, give yourself a day or two before snorkeling hard. The safety study flagged recent prolonged air travel as a possible factor in SI-ROPE, and while the science is still developing, a cautious buffer costs nothing.
  • Snorkel with a buddy. Keep visual contact. If either of you feels suddenly winded, remove the mask, float on your back, signal for help, and head in.
  • If you use the Palawan vest, remember it's a buoyancy aid, not a life preserver. Know your limits and don't let gear give you false confidence.

For decades, tall people got handed gear built for someone else's body. I internalized that discomfort as normal. It's not.
