The resistance varied wildly, and here’s the part that got me: even experienced technicians couldn’t tell which snorkels were high-resistance just by looking at them. Some of the most unforgettable snorkeling experiences involve drifting with the current along a reef edge. You cover huge distances effortlessly, seeing manta rays and reef sharks and turtles glide by.
But the research on exertion is sobering. Among the survivors studied, nearly every case involved extraordinary effort: swimming against a current, pushing to keep up with a group, or covering too much distance. The sequence was always the same: sudden shortness of breath, fatigue, loss of strength, then panic and fading consciousness. And because SI-ROPE doesn’t cause splashing or calling out, it’s easy for a buddy to miss until it’s too late.
If you book a drift snorkel, ask the operator these questions before you get in the water:
- Can I easily exit the current at any point?
- Is there a boat following the group?
- What’s the plan if someone gets into trouble?
- Do you brief guests on the signs of breathing distress?
A good operator will welcome these questions. A bad one might not have good answers.
The Air Travel Factor Nobody Mentions
This one surprised me the most. The study couldn’t prove a definitive link, but the evidence strongly suggests that long flights can temporarily weaken your lung membranes. Cabin pressure is similar to being at 8,000 feet elevation. After hours of that, your pulmonary capillaries may be slightly more prone to leaking fluid when you add snorkeling resistance.
The practical advice from the researchers: wait two to three days after flying before you snorkel. Not just for jet lag. For your lungs to recover.
I now plan all my snorkel trips accordingly. If I’m flying to the Maldives, Belize, or Fiji, I schedule arrival a few days early. I swim lightly, walk the beach, let my body acclimatize. The reef will still be there. And I’ll enjoy it more knowing I’m not stacking risks.

The data from Hawai‘i tells a sobering story: of 32 snorkel-related deaths reviewed, 69% were visitors, and more than half were aged 50 or older. Only 16% were under 40. The people most at risk are often experienced adults who just didn’t know about SI-ROPE.
This isn’t about scaring anyone away from the water. It’s about making sure that when you go, you come back with stories—not statistics.
