The study found that 38% of near-drowning victims used a full-face mask, and 90% of those said the mask contributed to their trouble. Adding more features to a design that already makes emergency removal harder isn’t the answer.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: most devices solve a problem that isn’t actually killing snorkelers. The One Communication Skill That Actually Matters

  • Check in with yourself: Did you fly recently? The study suggests waiting 2-3 days after long-haul flights before snorkeling. I now follow that rule without exception.
  • Know your health: If you have any heart or lung conditions, even mild ones, talk to a doctor before you go. The research found that 44% of snorkel-related deaths had evidence of cardiac issues.
  • Test your gear in shallow water first. Don’t learn about your mask’s fit or your snorkel’s resistance when you’re already over a reef.

In the Water

  • Swim with a buddy and agree on a simple rule: if either of you stops moving or seems to change breathing patterns, check in immediately. No ego, no waiting.
  • Check your location every 30 seconds. Currents can drift you away from where you started without you noticing.
  • If you feel unexpected shortness of breath, stop. Remove your mask. Roll onto your back. Breathe slow and deep. Signal for help if needed. Get out of the water.

What About the Gear Itself?

The snorkel you choose matters more than most people realize. The research team tested 50 different snorkels and found huge variation in how much resistance they create when you inhale. Some required more than three times the negative pressure of others.
