I have spent more time in the water than on land some summers, and for years I never wore a snorkeling vest. A late afternoon session off Cozumel changed that. A 2022 peer-reviewed study in the Hawai'i Journal of Health and Social Welfare identified increased exertion as one of several factors associated with Rapid Onset Pulmonary Edema, or ROPE, in snorkelers. The working explanation is that breathing through a narrow tube creates negative pressure in the lungs, and pairing that with heavy effort can move fluid into the lung cavity. The researchers reviewed thirty-two snorkel-related deaths and found pulmonary edema in every one of them at autopsy. Eight of those victims were experienced free divers and spear fishers. That detail rewired my thinking. Experience does not make you immune.
A vest does not remove the need to pay attention. If you feel short of breath, dizzy, or uncomfortable, exit the water and remove your mask. Never snorkel alone; keep a buddy within sight. If you have a heart or lung condition, talk to your doctor before you snorkel. Some safety guides suggest waiting a day or two after extended air travel before a long session, though the connection between air travel and ROPE is still being studied. Currents, waves, and water temperature also change how hard your body works. Let conditions choose your route.
What a Good Vest Does Differently
Not every flotation aid fits the way snorkelers move. The ones that work best share a few traits. They sit at the waist or chest without riding up. They adjust quickly. They do not interfere with the mask or the snorkel. They let you change buoyancy without taking them off.

- Slow your kick to about half its usual rate. With flotation, you do not need a strong kick to hold position. A slow flutter or one frog kick every few seconds does the job.
- Use your hands less. Fold them across your chest or let them trail behind you. Every hand movement spends attention you could spend on the reef.
The result is stillness. Stillness changes what you see. Fish approach a quiet body. Your breathing settles. The reef becomes a place you are inside.
