Beach Towels: Everything You Need to Know.

Every year, roughly 400 million Americans take to the beach to relax by the waves and get their summer tan on. The simplicity of beach activities is part of what makes the sandy destination so enjoyable – all you need is a swimsuit and a towel to enjoy the trip; the beach will do the rest.
As it turns out, you may be unaware of some towel tips and tricks. What’s the best way to pack or carry a towel? Do you need a beach towel on a cruise? How do you pack beach towels in a suitcase? Luckily for you, we’ve compiled our best beach towel advice to help you rock your next summer vacation. Let’s dive in!

How to Fold Beach Towels

You can fold a towel in several different ways, from a simple fold-in-half-until-it’s-small technique to fancy hotel-style folding. Here are two quick and easy ways to fold a beach towel:

Method #1

  • Lay out your towel lengthwise.
  • Fold it in half, right to left, to make a square.
  • Fold it in thirds by bringing the bottom third to the middle and the top third over that.
  • Fold in thirds again by bringing the right third to the middle and the left third over that.

Method #2

  • Lay out your towel lengthwise.
  • Fold it in half, top to bottom, to make a long rectangle rather than a square.
  • Fold each short end toward the middle.*
  • Fold the two sides up like a book. This should hide all of the edges and tags on your towel.

* Tip: Depending on the thickness of your towel, you may need to leave a small gap in the middle so you can fold the ends together.

You may find that one folding method works better than another, depending on the size and shape of your towel.

How Big Is a Beach Towel?

Towel size depends on the retailer, but a typical beach towel is slightly bigger than a bath towel and measures around 58”x30”. Our supersized Akumal Beach Towel measures 75”x35”, which gives you more space and comfort for lying down.

To fold your towel, method #1 may be better for large towels, while method #2 works well for regular or small towels.

How to Pack Beach Towels in a Suitcase

Crumpling your beach towel into a suitcase without folding or rolling it is the worst packing mistake you can make. The folding techniques mentioned above will prevent wrinkling and maximize space for clothes and other necessities.

Large beach towels may take up a lot of room in your suitcase. To ensure everything will fit, put your towels and other large items in first and fit smaller items into the remaining spaces. To compact your towel even further, consider storing it in a sealable bag and use a vacuum sealer to pull out all of the air. This will compress the towel and save space, though fluffier towels may remain flattened once you open the bag.

How to Store Beach Towels

If you have a closet overflowing with old beach towels, it may be time to reorganize. With a little effort, beach towels can actually add to your home décor.

First, go through your old towels and decide which ones are worth keeping. You can donate lightly used towels in decent condition to Goodwill thrift stores, while well-worn towels can go to local animal shelters.

Next, fold or roll your remaining towels to save space in your closet. You know how to fold a towel now, but here are two easy ways to also roll a towel:

Method #1: Fold the towel in half lengthwise and roll from top to bottom.

Method #2: Fold the towel in thirds lengthwise and roll from top to bottom.

Folded towels fit best on a closet shelf, while folded towels fit best in a basket. The first rolling method creates a longer roll that fits well in high-sided baskets. The second method is slightly bulkier and shorter for smaller baskets.

Do You Need a Beach Towel on a Cruise?

Easy answer: no!

Cruise ships will supply bath, pool, and beach towels, so you don’t need to worry about packing one. If you’ve grown too attached to your Akumal Beach Towel and don’t think you can leave it behind, however, we certainly don’t blame you.
